Dominio de Tares Baltos 2013

External Review:

Vivid ruby. Red berries and cherry pit on the nose, with complicating notes of smoky herbs and cracked pepper. Nicely focused dark fruit flavors are given spine by juicy acidity and show a touch of bitterness on the back. Gentle tannins add shape to the spicy dark fruit finish. This is drinking well now.

New Cepas Viejas, new technology, knowledge and passion for the wine is the presentation card of Dominio de Tares. Far away from foreigner varieties and focusing our efforts in the native Mencía and Godello varieties, we have brought out surprising wines because of their equilibrium and elegance; wines that cradled in noble woods fulfil our satisfaction. The tendering of an ancient vineyard, with vines rooted in the heart of the Bierzo; the manual harvest, cluster by cluster; and the time passing by the juice sleeping in French and American barrels, confer our wines with unique traits in the Spanish wine panorama. Our working philosophy, concentrating in the continuous effort to become better; and the commitment to our clients and consumers sums up the soul of this winery, founded in the year 2000. Founded only in 2000, Dominio de Tares was started by a group of young individuals from Bierzo, only one of whom, Amancio Fernandez, a highly acclaimed winemaker, was previously involved in wine. Despite the seeming lack of experience, they have become one of the region's leading producers. Their focus is on making wine from old vine Mencia grown high in the hills. Producing 500,000 bottles annually from 200 acres (75 acres of their own vineyards, and 125 acres leased), they are one of the largest in the region. Pedro Gonzalez replaced Fernandez as technical director (winemaker) two years ago. Read less

pretty tasteless. not bad, just not much there. had it on the 2nd day after drinking one glass the night before when it obviously needed some air. it thickened but no flavors came out.

Deep dark color with thick legs. The nose is smokey minerals and rich paste like black fruits. Raw meat and dark pepper ladden black cherry. In the mouth on first sip I see medium tannins and a high acidity that leaves the mouth with a dry finish and chalky texture. Rich and layered with dark cherry notes, black berry and charcoal notes. Really a wine that opens up with time. A bit thin at first it was strange to see this wine take on body with time out of the bottle. For the money a wine worth trying. Though it does have a big structure I would say this wine will not improve too much, but rather just needs some air to really develop. 3.5/5 [NR]

A very nice introduction to the 100% Mencia group. This one will make you want to try a few more of this varietal.

Had this at La Cave du Vin in Cleveland Heights - amazing wine! Aromas that would make you think twice about it - barn yard and earth. Deliciously earthy and fruity on the palate.

Herbal and smoky notes mingle in this light, firm red, framing a modest core of cherry and tobacco. Fresh acidity keeps it all lively, despite slightly grippy tannins. Drink now through 2013.

The 2008 Baltos made from 100% Mencia and aged for 6 months in seasoned French and American barriques. It offers up an earthy minerality along with aromas of cherry cola and spicy black fruits. Dense, rich, and layered on the palate, this juicy, pleasure-bent effort has enough stuffing to evolve for 1–2 years but can be approached now. It is an outstanding value.

Displays deep cherry color and aroma, full bodied yet elegant, a fine red wine of memorable character.
