Dows Crusted Port NV

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes Crusted Port is a blend of full-bodied first class wines from recent vintages, which have been matured in seasoned oak casks for two to three years before being bottled.~The wine is bottled (unfiltered) and released after aging an additional three years in the bottle.~The wine for the blend comes from Dows best vineyards:~The Quinta do Bomfim, and the Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira.~The year marked on the label refers to the year it was bottled and not to a specific vintage.~Dows Crusted Port, although ready to drink at the time of its release, can be further aged in the bottle for 5-8 years.~It will then develop the bouquet and flavor unique to bottle matured wines, and thus offers an excellent value alternative to Vintage Port.

Currently six members of the Symington family are fully engaged in the management of Dow’s, they represent the 12th and 13th generations involved in the Port trade via their great grandmother Beatrice Atkinson and over 350 years since their ancestors played a significant role in laying the foundations of the Port trade. Together with the family’s other Port firms, Dow’s is the only surviving independent Port producer in the hands of just one family amongst all the great historic Port companies. Following the great investments made in vineyards in the late 19th century, the company was one of the first to build a modern winery in the region in 1964, later to be adapted to become one of the first wineries with temperature control in all its fermentation tanks. In 1997, the company built a new winery at Quinta do Sol, widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative in Portugal. This was a major investment for the Symington family. The company’s commitment to top quality vineyard ownership, winemaking and the finest Ports remains at the heart of this family business. Peter Symington and his son Charles, Dow’s principal wine makers, have between them been nominated ‘Fortified Wine Maker of the Year’ at the International Wine Challenge a record seven times. These awards are testament to Dow’s reputation as one of the finest premium Port producers. Read less

Dow's Crusted Port is a blend of particularly full bodied Ports of very high quality from recent vintages (normally from the two or three harvests immediately preceding the bottling date). These Ports are matured in cask for some 12 to 18 months before being bottled without any fining or filtration. Dow’s Crusted Port is then aged for a further three years in bottle in the Dow’s cellars prior to being released for sale. This prolonged bottle-ageing gives this Port a superb style and character with the distinctive Dow’s dry finish. Dow’s Crusted Port is an outstanding wine with which to end a fine lunch or dinner and is ready for drinking when released onto the market, but it will continue to improve in bottle. Vibrant and full of ripe red-berry fruit flavours balanced by rich black chocolate over tones, Dow’s Crusted Port is superb value for money and gives many of the unique flavours of the great bottle matured Vintage Ports at a fraction of the price.
