Dow's Tawny Porto Aged 20 Years NV

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Have a cigar. It’s the right match for this very British, old-school Port. The warm, peppery alcohol seems to ask for it, while the orange zest and walnut flavors will taste refreshing aginst the tobacco smoke. This has a clarity and crispness to keep its fat texture buttoned up.

Currently six members of the Symington family are fully engaged in the management of Dow’s, they represent the 12th and 13th generations involved in the Port trade via their great grandmother Beatrice Atkinson and over 350 years since their ancestors played a significant role in laying the foundations of the Port trade. Together with the family’s other Port firms, Dow’s is the only surviving independent Port producer in the hands of just one family amongst all the great historic Port companies. Following the great investments made in vineyards in the late 19th century, the company was one of the first to build a modern winery in the region in 1964, later to be adapted to become one of the first wineries with temperature control in all its fermentation tanks. In 1997, the company built a new winery at Quinta do Sol, widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative in Portugal. This was a major investment for the Symington family. The company’s commitment to top quality vineyard ownership, winemaking and the finest Ports remains at the heart of this family business. Peter Symington and his son Charles, Dow’s principal wine makers, have between them been nominated ‘Fortified Wine Maker of the Year’ at the International Wine Challenge a record seven times. These awards are testament to Dow’s reputation as one of the finest premium Port producers. Read less

Soft in texture yet mouthwatering in its intensity; this is a honeyed, nutty wine filled with dried fruit, toffee and almond butter aromas and flavors. Like all tawnies, it won’t improve with bottle age, so drink this while your young vintage Ports hog up the cellar space.

Lively, classic old tawny nose. Voluptuous, long and delicious.

Pale to mid-deep tawny/mahogany colour. A rather “silent” nose compared to some in this tasting but obviously well developed. Thick-cut traditional marmalade character, rich and spicy mid-palate yet made in a dryish house style with gentle spicy length. Rich, complex and very satisfying.

Delicate, with a lively array of bright dried mango, date and dried apricot flavors that feature plenty of smoky notes. Features white chocolate, fruitcake and honey notes on the rich finish.

Complex aromas of toffee, roasted nuts, lead pencil, orange peel and caraway seed. Intensely flavored fruit is silky but nicely delineated; offers a fresh flavor of orange peel. Not at all thick, but brisk and vibrant. Finishes clean and long, with hints of smoked nuts and marzipan. This has far stronger material than the 10-Year-Old, which seemed clumsy and dull in comparison.
