Ermitage Domaine Philippe et Vincent Jaboulet 2012
Member Review by duncan 906:
I bought this bottle of wine for £21.50 from the www.bidforwine.co.uk website.Hermitage is an appellation created in 1937,although viticulture here goes back centuries, for red and white wines from the slopes of a hill by the town of Tain on the east bank of the Rhone river about 40 miles south of Lyon.It is a very prestigious appellation having once been favoured by Louis IV and the Russian tsars and takes its name from a chapel ot hermitage at the top of the hill built by a crusader knight called Caspar de Sterimberg. My bottle comes from Domaine Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet who prefer the original spelling of Ermitage without the initial 'H' and consists of 100% syrah from 40 year old vines on a half hectare plot on the hill of Tain. I started my bottle last night with my supper of beef stew. The wine was a very dark colour, was full bodied and had lots of a blackcurrant style fruit so intense it was almost like licorice with a hint of pepper or spice and some soft tannins although there was plenty of structure. In short this was a lovely bottle of wine
Add winemaker's notesFather and son team Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet started their domaine in 2006 after the sale of the family business Paul Jaboulet Aine. They kept back 15 hectares and bought another 15 from Domaine Collonge in Croze-Hermitage.They produce a range of red and white wines from the Hermitage [though they use the original spelling without the initial 'H'],Croze-Hermitage and Cornas appellations.
