Expression de Saint-Mont Vignobles de Gascogne 2017

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from a local supermarket where it was on special offer for £5.Saint Mont is an appellation created in 2011,although there has been viticulture here for centuries, for red, rose and white wines from 46 communes around the medieval Benedictine abbey of that name that once featured on the pilgrim route to Spain. This is located about 25 miles north of the town of Pau by the Spanish border. Vignobles de Gascogne is a name sometimes used by the Producteurs Plaimont co-operative group which was instrumental in getting appellation status and is responsible for 90% of Saint Mont production. It is made from a combination of gros manseng, corbu and arrufiac grapes I started the bottle the other evening with my supper of herring salad. It is a dry wine but not bone dry and tending towards demi-sec.There is plenty of a peach elderflower and gooseberry style fruit. It is a little reminiscent of a sauvignon blanc. In short it had plenty of flavour and was a good match for my fish

Their philosophy is a respect for the age-old traditions. Aware of the necessity to preserve their land and heritage for future generations they use environmentally friendly methods and help young winegrowers set themselves up. Come and share the passion of these men and their region ... Stay at a winegrower’s, in the heart of the vineyard, in a gîte or in a B&B and discover the entire wealth of this preserved and authentic land. Read less
