Freestone Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 Freestone Chardonnay has all the minerality and terroir characteristics that the 2006 Chardonnay possessed, but with an added weight and purity that expresses all that we are trying to achieve at Freestone. The long, dry growing season yielded smaller than typical clusters and grapes, so juice yields were lower than expected overall for the 2007 vintage, resulting in wines with great concentration and precision. Steely, yet unctuous, this wine generously offers up aromas of smoked cedar, wet earth, honeysuckle and fresh tangerine, while on the palate it provides mineral-driven citrus, nectar, honey, and an acid structure that contributes power and persistence.

Scents of melon and honey. Light golden in color with a slight cloudiness. Tickles the tongue with a refreshing crispness. Light up front with hints of honey and pear on the back.

Almost 40% of this delicious Chardonnay comes from "central" Russian River vineyards (18% Bacigalupi, 21% Dutton Ranch), while the rest comes from the cooler estate vineyards in the Freestone area - which is also nominally Russian River rather than Sonoma Coast. In any case, it's a lovely, rich blend showing ripe, almost sweet citrus and pear fruit along with a pronounced yeasty character. Soft and elegant in the mouth but with nice acid balance. Expensive, but there's no arguing with the quality.

A Chardonnay wine from California in USA. 2007 Freestone Chardonnay 750ml

Tasting Notes:

The 2007 Pastorale Chardonnay is the first of its kind from Freestone. Low yields produced only small amounts of juice and thus extremely limited quantities of wine. The grapes, harvested from superior Chardonnay blocks located just behind the winery, are comprised of clonal material that is mixed for the sake of diversity. Each clone or heirloom selection adds a different flavor or structural element to the balance and complexity of the finished wine. As this tiny load of Chardonnay was pressed and fermented, the lees were stirred frequently during and after fermentation to build the mid palate. The flavor concentration of the grapes, combined with the creaminess from the lees, has created a wine that boasts a copious bouquet of citrus, brioche, wet rocks and lemon curd. The initial sip suggests an ageworthy acid backbone, while the full body and persistent finish coats the palate with rich, sappy flavors of creme brulee , honey, citrus and white tea infusion.
