Gaja Ca'Marcanda Promis 2015

Member Review by William Djubin:

Thanks for the Taste Angelo. The 2011 is young and excitable. I chose this wine as the Closer (Entrée) and Gaja Promis delivered. Mille Gratis Gaja.

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Great introduction to Gaja wine. Great jammy fruit laid upon a bed of soft tannins from the small amount of sangiovese this wine is blended with.

A well integrated supertuscan plum blackberry and hint of licorice indicate good for at least 10 years

Our Wine Express Italian Wine of the Year!! Along the Tuscan seaboard extending south from Livorno lies the Maremma. For centuries a marshland, it has established itself over the last quarter century as one of Italy's most prestigious wine regions. It is in this region that Angelo Gaja has begun his new winemaking venture. In 1996, along the road between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci, Gaja began planting 150 acres of vineyards, primarily. This 2011 is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese. The Wine Advocate scored it 93 points saying "The 2011 Promis is darkly concentrated with thick tones of black tar, espresso, candied cherry, clove, rum cake and bitter chocolate. Although it feels broad and large in the mouth, the wine also shows enormous elegance and focus. That inner opulence is channeled into tight, sharp pulses that impact the palate with grace and poise. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2024."

Light garnet. Bright and fruity with a jammy nose. A delightful wine that combines the elegance and suppleness of Merlot and Syrah with the austerity of Sangiovese. Balanced, almost musical, its a pleasure to drink from an early age and also has an aging

Der Promis ist ein weicher, vollfleischiger Wein der neu aus dem Mischsatz 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah und 10% Sangiovese besteht - ein attraktives Gewächs von perfekter Harmonie.
