Winemaker's Notes:

The average yield is 25 hecto liters per hectare. After “greenharvesting” in June, the grapes are picked in late September when they have reached perfect ripeness. The grapes are de-stemmed (separated from their stalks) and then placed inv ats to macerate for 10 to 15 days. The pumping-over and maturing process ensure that the “best” of the skins are extracted before pressing. Ageing takes place partly in 225-litre barrels, after which the wine is bottled.

Gerard Bertrand quickly developed a wine merchant business by selecting winemakers and estates that shared his sense of what was called for. In order to express his talent as a winemaker beyond his native appellation of the Corbières, he chose to invest in other wines of the Languedoc with strong potential. In 1994 he bought the Cigalus Vin de Pays d’Oc parcels, then three years later the 58 hectares of Château Laville-Bertrou in Minervois La Livinière. A forerunner in the Languedoc, Gerard Bertrand understood the evolution in consumer behavior towards expressive, well-balanced and elegant wines. By offering great wines at fair prices his success was immediate. The Prestige Wines of Gerard Bertrand quickly became the quality reference in the opinion of the professionals. In the footsteps of his father, Gerard has been contributing to the epic story of the Languedoc in these past years; he is the payee of the qualitative changes made to a good number of Languedoc terroirs and estates. He notably defends Boutenac as a terroirs and fights for its recognition by the INAO (Institut National des Appellations d’Origine). Rather stemmy on the nose with blooming aromas of wild black cherry jam, licorice and violet candies, slight root vegetable notes and a deep medicinal vein. This enters the mouth with a light touch, though there are noticeable tannins here offering early mouthgrab. The flavors are fairly intense, lightly fruity and dominated by stony mineral notes and sweet root vegetable flavors with a finish that is moderately long and brisk with plenty of dusty tannins and flavors of charcoal and old wood accenting the fading red berry fruit. 85pts

Dark earthy aromas. Little fruit on the nose. Elegance yet rustic factor. Nose is off putting for me.
