Groom Barossa Valley Bush Block Zinfandel 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine is produced from our estate vineyard in the Kalimna area of the Barossa Valley. The area is home to some of Australia’s greatest Shiraz vineyards. Known for its unforgiving soils we felt it a perfect site to help pioneer the Zinfandel grape into Australia. The vines were grown in a traditional head-trained method, commonly referred to as “bush vines” in Australia. This training produces lower yields and more concentrated berries. This first release is a solid wine displaying very typical zinfandel hallmarks. Brick red in colour, a very spicy, raisiny aroma and a rich medium weighted palate with some apparent sweetness, although the wine is dry. This sweetness in taste comes from the higher alcohol and raisining of some of the grapes.

Marschall Groom Cellars is a very small family winery situated in the famous Barossa Valley region of South Australia. The winery produces three varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz & Zinfandel - under the label GROOM. Marschall Groom Cellars is the culmination of a dream, backed up by many years of talk and family discussion. The proprietors are David & Jeanette Marschall and their six children, and Daryl & Lisa Groom and their four children. The dream started to become reality with the purchase of 87 acres of bare land in the Kalimna appellation of the Barossa Valley, directly adjacent to the renowned Penfolds Kalimna vineyard - the home of Grange. In 1997 the first acres on our Kalimna Bush Block were planted to Shiraz, producing its first crop in the 1999 vintage. To compliment our young Shiraz fruit we source from one other very reputable high quality vineyard in the Barossa, the Fechner Vineyard which is home to 50 year-old vines. The Barossa Valley is too warm to grow world class Sauvignon Blanc. This variety is ideally suited to much cooler, higher rainfall climates. After thoroughly researching the climatic conditions within South Australia, a 20 acre vineyard in the Adelaide Hills appellation of Lenswood was planted to provide the perfect grapes for our Sauvignon Blanc. In 2000, 8 acres of experimental Zinfandel vines were planted on the Kalimna Bush Block. A very limited introductory wine release from these grapes was made from the 2003 vintage. The first Commercial release into the USA was the 2006 vintage. Also working with the company to maintain and ensure our quality standards is Consultant Winemaker, Natasha Mooney; previously the winemaker for E&E Black Pepper Shiraz, and now working closely with Daryl to produce our stunning wines. Our wines are hand-crafted and produced in limited quantities. Read less

Beginnings of tawny coloration, with semi clear transparency.....overall a mildly rusty look. Aromas are a blend of smooth vanilla induced oak, mild spices (cinnamon and pepper) along with ripe berries such as cranberry, cherry and raspberry. Flavors are very fruit forward, with soft vanilla oaked strawberry, blackberry cranberry and black cherry. The mouthfeel is creamy soft butter and is of medium body, with a gentle lingering profile.....an excellent wine that is still in its' peak and dare I say could go another 2-4 years?!

Tasting Notes:

Our Zinfandel is quite a unique wine. The nose is unmistakably Zinfandel in fruit character. It displays lifted spicy aromas and bright red fruits of strawberries, cranberries and pomegranate. It is further complexed by very slight raisiny notes from the riper zinfandel grapes. The color is a vibrant red/purple showing nice depth. The wine is medium bodied and structured with bright acidity, finishing with evident but soft tannins.
