Guenoc IV Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Beckstoffer Vineyard Reserve 1999

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Pretty intense soil driven notes with lots of bottle sweetness behind it and classic, chipotle, black currant and tobacco notes. Nice and round with bright acids and a finely polished mature mouthfeel, Still a bit of tannin on the finish with lots of faded red fruits, pomegranate and cherry note with a finale of cedar. Elegant and still fairly rich this retains good freshness in a simple pure paradigm. Definitely a throwback style with it's 12.5% alcohol and appeal built and balance as opposed to power. Gains a bit of depth and power with air but the appeal is all that dusty cherry/strawberry/raspberry fruit. this is sapid and keeps me coming back for more.91pts

Smoky violets plums and raspberries - perfect match for barbecued lamb's kidneys. Super wine and drinking extremely well in 2009!

You're on the set of a dry comedy show set in a morgue, or maybe Twin Peaks. We laugh at death, and poke him with sticks. It's hot in here, lots of alcohol, faded washed-up tannins, a sense of comfort.

Believe it or not, even after 18 years in the bottle it still has a bit of heat on the nose. This is a mature wine. Warm, pleasant silky mouthfeel with soft gentle tannins and a finely toasted oak permeates the midpalate. Finish is slightly herbaceous but mostly wooded -- I'm getting some tobacco and dried black fruits. A treat.

Light red with some old yellow on the edges. A nose full of hot alcohol and a very round light mellow slightly bitter flavor. Tastes a little like some Barolo I've tried, which is unlike the newer Cali Cabs I like. Not really my cup of tea but for a hundred dollar bottle I can appreciate it. Hell, I'd better.

Fantastic nose of red currant fruits with very nice mineral and herbaceous notes. Great blend of sugar ripeness and tartness from tart tannins and phenols. Aging well and taking on a barolo-esque quality - very nice. Decant before drinking!

A nice, full-bodied well-balanced California Cab with good black fruit and a strong finish.
