Gundlach Bundschu Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Valley 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Downright meaty and roasted herb garden almost remind of Chateauneuf with gamy, herbal garrigue floral, very complex and increasingly attractive scents, soft round entry, great bright acids, balanced tannins, a bit of camphor, red currant reduction, tobacco, balanced in the mouth, clean fresh finish with wild red berry fruits and just a touch of spice on the moderately long finish. 91pts

At Gundlach Bundschu we define sustainability broadly, seeking not only to be responsible stewards of the land, but also to preserve this land for future generations of our family. There is nothing static about this view of sustainability—it requires innovation and action. We believe that preserving the unique ecosystem of Rhinefarm is essential to wine quality, as well as to the health of our family and business. The introduction of beneficial predators, from owls and bluebirds to beetles and mites, and intensive pest monitoring allows us to eliminate all regular use of pesticides, use no pre-emergent herbicides and limit the use of aggressive herbicides. Cover crops contribute vital diversity and nutrition to the soils, and we utilize registered organic compounds and practices whenever possible. Vigilant management of our acute deficit irrigation program and water reclamation ponds promote conservation, recycling 70% of winery water. We use biodiesel to fuel our tractors, and continually seek ways to enhance environmental quality and make the most efficient use of resources. Like many of his family members before him, Jeff Bundschu is striving to redefine the estate vision to meet the industry challenges of the times. With superb vineyards and a talented team of employees, he is excited about the future of the estate. “Each generation of my family that has stood on this dirt felt compelled to looking at the vines and wines with a fresh eye. Our winery’s evolution is destined—families evolve. Land evolves. Plants evolve. Palates evolve.” Equally important to Bundschu is the preservation of the open-minded and spirited culture with which the winery has long been associated. “Our life here at Gundlach Bundschu, with its wine and good people, has always been about laughter, hard work, enjoying the inspiration that comes from being in such a beautiful place, and sharing what we have with our friends and neighbors.” Tasting Room Our intimate tasting room can only accomodate small groups, and we request groups of eight or more reserve a private tour for your visit. To me GunBun is about cabernet and this is definitely classic Sonoma Cabernet. It is more herbaceous than ripe fruit. Nose has some some spice (cassis) with leather and dark fruit. Good fruit flavors with spice and silky tannins and great balance.

Just opened a bottle on a casual note as it was a wedding gift. I honestly had no prior knowledge of this wine, but soon realized once the aromas hit my nose that I may have wanted to save this wine for a special occassion. Quickly, my husband told me to "enjoy" because every day is a special occassion. Absolutely fabulous!!! Deep purple, berry, rich, flavorful, smooth, just perfect.

Another very drinkable wine that is good as an every day table wine. A bit oaky, not sweet, and nice aromas of cedar and oak.

VINTAGE NOTES: Everything happened fastin 2014! A warm, dry winter brought the vines to life early and a very warm spring and summer meant perfect ripening conditions but an earlier harvest. A couple of heat spikes during the harvest promoted skin development, resulting in great color and tannins— a little more evolved than 2013, making for more immediately approachable reds. Great flavors and concentration overall. VINEYARD INFORMATION: Our Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced primarily from the family’s 150+year-old Rhinefarm Estate Vineyard, located on the southwest slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, just eight miles north of San Pablo Bay. The terrain above 150 foot elevation is dominated by Arrowhead Mountain and features steep, southwest-facing hillsides of shallow, rocky soils of volcanic ash and alluvial wash. Pervasive maritime breezes and long daylight exposure allow fruit to develop intense concentration while retaining vibrant structure. A portion is sourced from slightly warmer, high elevation sites adding weight to the midpalate. TASTING NOTES: Blessed as the third great Cabernet Sauvignon vintage in a row, 2014 is like a culmination of the previous two: the lush fruit and approachability of 2012 and 2013’s power and structure. Invitingly lavish aromas and flavors of dark fruits and berries intermingled with espresso, cocoa, and warm baking spices are buoyed by the velvety texture and precise acidity. Fine tannins linger to keep this welcoming invitation open for more exploration now or into the distant future. COMPOSITION: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon 8% Petit Verdot 3% Merlot 1% Cabernet Franc 1% Malbec Alc: 14.8% pH: 3.81 TA: 0.53 g/100mL ** Only 7 in Stock **

Philosophy: Cabernet from Rhinefarm is shy – it doesn’t reveal itself quickly. Napa Cabernets often announce themselves as the life of the party but Rhinefarm Cabs are serious, dark and deep with lots of tannin. They’re designed to age, Bordeaux-style. Cooler nights and cooler mornings help shape our style of Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as our meticulous handwork in the vineyards. The grapes need a long time to ripen to perfection and thus, are the first vines we prune since they need that extra time to develop. With this grape, patience is key to creating beautiful, vineyard-driven wine. In general, we pick Cabernet Sauvignon around Halloween before the rain arrives for the winter, then optically sort them with as much gentle handing as possible. Like a shy person, it can be its own worst enemy but the blending grapes help it come out of its shell. Notes: Cabernet Sauvignon grown on Rhinefarm creates wines of depth and power, well-integrated tannin structure, intense dark fruit and layers of cocoa and cassis. Our Cabernet Sauvignons age beautifully up to ten years and beyond. Blend: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Petit Verdot 3% Merlot 1% Cabernet Franc Aging: 5-15 years Barrel Aging: 18 Months, 100% French oak - 45% new Acid: 0.62g/100ml PH: 3.79 Alcohol: 14.8%

Winemaker Tasting Notes: The 2012 vintage was ideal for growing deep, dark and elegant cabernet sauvignon here on the western slopes of the Mayacamas. Intense aromas of fresh black currant, cacao, and a hint of dried tobacco are followed by a opulent flavors of cassis, blackberry, fresh currant and dark chocolate, layered with complex notes of espresso, anise and crushed stone. The texture is remarkably polished and velvety given the wine’s depth and power -- all thanks to smooth, ripe tannins that draw to a long, lush finish. Delicious upon release; optimal cellaring time 5 to 15 years from vintage. - Winery Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Petit Verdot 1% Cabernet Franc 3% Malbec Aged: Eighteen months in 100% French oak, 45% new. Thin stave, tight grain. Primary coopers Vicard, Taransaud & Ermitage. Alcohol: 14.8% TA: 0.55 g/100ml pH: 3.86

Tasting Notes - Dark purple color, aromas of violet, anise and lifted red and black currant. The lush, smooth entry leads to dark berry, cassis, shaved chocolate and espresso bean flavors. Big, smooth tannins give weight and roundness to the mouthfeel. The long finish is smooth with balancing notes of red fruit. Delicious upon release; optimal cellaring time four to 15 years from vintage.
