Winemaker's Notes:

The spectacular beauty of California 's central coast is probably the best-known region in all of California for its unique lifestyle. Monterey County's dramatic ocean scenery, historic communities, artistic culture, verdant pine forests, and bountiful agriculture have beckoned adventure-seekers, seafarers, artists, writers and vacationers for over 100 years. And the 99 miles of breathtaking Pacific coastline is something no other California county can boast. With an inspiration to raise Monterey wines to the highest level, the wines of Hahn Estates are created with a philosophy that all great wines are special – akin to the region they were grown in. The Hahn wines celebrate everything that is Monterey – unique in thought, style and setting. Wines of Monterey Distinction. The Smith Ranch had been a horse ranch, while the neighboring Hook Ranch had raised cattle for generations. With their prime location in the Santa Lucia Highlands overlooking the Salinas Valley, these ranches-turned-vineyards presented ideal growing conditions for growing premium varietal fruit. Smith & Hook Winery released its first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon to high acclaim in 1980. In 1991, Nicky created the Hahn Estates brand to showcase supple, accessible, and attractively priced wines from the family's Monterey County vineyards. In German, “Hahn” means “Rooster” and for this reason a rooster embellishes the Hahn Estates label, honoring the Hahn family's European heritage. And while Smith & Hook remains the first wine produced by the Hahn family, Hahn Estates is the primary wine brand produced by the Hahns and the winery is now proudly known as “Hahn Estates / Smith & Hook Winery.” Read less

The Hahn's found their first vineyards in the late ‘70s in Monterey County and started producing wines that really made everyone take notice. In 1988 Nicky Hahn advocated for the new wine appellation that ultimately led to the creation of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Since then it's been clear that the vineyards in this area were special. The combination of high altitude and the cooling influence of the ocean breezes make it a perfect region for growing Pinot Noir with lots of character and intensity. This 2012 is sourced entirely from their 650 acres of estate vineyards that run up to 1200 of feet altitude. It's a wine that really showcases the appellation. After the fruit was hand-picked and sorted, it underwent a three-day cold soak in open top fermenters. The wine was aged for 11 months in a selection of French oak barrels, 35% new. Decnater rated it 92 points and Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 saying "The nose is reserved at first, but then offers a mushroomy earthiness alongside fresh raspberry, chopped black sage and olive tapenade. There is a solid blend of tannins, fruit and acid on the palate, like black tea and espresso with berry syrup."

The Hahn family started their winery in 1980 and today it's still family owned and operated. Located in the Central Coast of California they produce a number of different Pinot Noirs and have a particularly deft hand when it comes to bringing out the best in that sometimes finicky grape variety. This wine is their most accessible, grapes are sourced from around the state from growers that and the Hahn family has a relationship with and bring them the best possible fruit. The wine is aged in French oak, 33% new. It shows enticing aromas of fresh strawberries black cherries and a touch of toasty oak. Lush and expressive on the palate with strawberry, cherry, cranberry and vanilla nuances. Beautifully balanced with a lingering finish, it's an excellent value Pinot Noir.

Deep rubyin color, Hahn Estates Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is rich, layered and complex. Bright red berry fruit dominate the nose and palate, along with the lush dark fruit flavors characteristic of Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir. Notes of spice, dried herbs, violets, minerals and toasty oak are balanced by cool-climate acidity and silky tannins.
