Chateau Haut-Bailly is situated on the left bank of the River Garonne, south of Bordeaux  in the commune of  Pessac-Léognan –  home to all the Graves Crus Classés. A vineyard with 30 hectares (74 acres) of planted vines on one piece of  land, it sits on a high ridge overlooking a small winding road leading from Leognan to Cadaujac. The sloping terrain is well-graded and has excellent drainage. If great wine results from a harmonious relationship between man, the vine, and nature – a concept the French call terroir – the most subtle of these three elements is the soil. At Haut-Bailly, it is sandy, mixed with gravel, and rests on a subsoil of sandstone petrified with the remains of prehistoric fossil shells. All this contributes to the special character of Haut-Bailly wine. Read less

Full ruby-red. Initially mute nose opened slowly to reveal complex aromas of raspberry plum hot stones tobacco saddle leather and toffee. Really explodes on the palate; lush and minerally with a compelling note of woodsmoke and firm acidity. Wonderful combination of sweetness and vibrancy. Finishes very long and subtle with firm tannins. 92 points Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Gorgeous aromas of crushed berries cigar box black licorice and tanned leather. Full-bodied with fine silky tannins and a medium to long finish. Seems a little tight right now. But refined and pretty. Nice for the vintage.-- 95/ 96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2008. -JS Wine Spectator.

Vibrant, floral aromas of lime, coconut and tropical fruits. Sweet but lively; very rich, with Chassagne-like flavors of quince jam, peach, flowers and herbs. Quite full, even velvety, in the mouth but racy and very long. A lovely showing. 92 points Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Bordeaux Blanc wine from Bordeaux in France. 1996 Haut Brion Blanc 750ml

Tasted at Bordeaux Index lunch. The Haut Brion 1996 continues to shine as one of the estate s standout releases of the decade. There is something perhaps a little rustic on the nose at first more "animally" than I have noticed on previous bottles. But it just oozes Graves-like fruit hints of black olive scorched earth and undergrowth. This is a nose you can lose yourself in. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity the tannins having just softened a little since two years ago.
