Bright and focused, this is on the lighter side, with a light burr of tannins around an airy core of berry and coffee flavors. Drink now through 2011.

Simple, clean and rounded out with balanced acids and just enough flesh to fill the mid-palate. It's a fair value at this price. A hint of herb and green bean in the finish.

Hogue's wines have been spotty of late, and the constant change in label design makes the wines difficult to track on the shelf. But this latest Merlot shows a marked improvement over recent vintages, a hopeful sign that this important producer is back on track. It's got a nice, soft entry, with black cherry candy dominating the palate. There's a slightly burnt, raisiny flavor running through the finish, as if the grapes were a bit roasted, but the tannins are smooth and for the price it drinks well and delivers an extra dollop of intensity.

Light, with pretty cherry, tobacco and loamy earth aromas and flavors that linger effectively on the refined finish.

High-toned purple fruit and bittersweet chocolate tannins give this some density, then the wine ends light, in a whiff of black smoke. An easy everyday red.

Crisp, lively style hints at dusky herb character around a pretty core of cherry and currant fruit, finishing with fine, firm tannins. Drink now through 2007.

Ripe and generous, with velvety tannins supporting the dark cherry and peppery-spicy flavors, picking up a minty note on the finish. Drink now through 2008.
