J. & H. A. Strub Riesling Soil To Soul Riesling Rheinhessen 2009

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Borealis-bright, chalky, like really concentrated Blanc de Blancs; Japanese green tea, limey (almost a Rieslaner nose); thick dense and vigorous. Chalk and apple and tarragon.

Wonderfully hiding its residual sugar amidst loads of fruit and gripping acidity, the 2001 Riesling Kabinett Niersteiner Brückchen comes across as dry. Zesty lemons and limes are interspersed with liquid minerals in this light to medium-bodied wine's aromas. Buttered stones, popcorn, slate, red currants, and crisp pears can be found in its lively yet rich character. Projected maturity: 2005-2010.

Almost dry-seeming (a conscious effort on the part of the importer), this wine is a great bargain. (Keep in mind yoursquo;re getting 33% more than in a 750-ml bottle.) Although a bit quiet on the nose, the flavors are zippy and pure, blending limes and peaches with a minerally, graphite note and a chalky finish.

Verging on medium-bodied, this has power for a kabinett. Drier than usual, with floral and peach notes. Firm. Lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2010.

The Paterberg vineyard covers an entire limestone plateau south of the village of Nierstein. This Riesling is full of lemongrass, minty herbs, and green apples on the palate. Quite vibrant and delicious with a chill.

Clean, refreshing and bursting with citrus and apple notes. Itrsquo;s a little on the tart side, but perfect to whet the appetite. Drink now through 2007.

One-third each Paterburg Spauml;tlese and two different Bruuml;ckchen Spauml;tlesen. One gets excellent Riesling Spauml;tlese labeled as Kabinett and sold at Liter-wine prices. the wine tastes dry, and the Paterberg aroma really blazes through, but the thick fruit of Bruuml;ckchen is chalky, stony and ideal for the ripe body of this wonderful wine. It follows the chalky profile of earlier vintages but with the chunky salivate-o-rama fruit of 2001.
