J Wine Company Sparkling Wine Russian River Valley 2002

External Review:

Rating: 95/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. It is a well-known fact in sparkling wine circles that fermenting and aging bubbly in magnum often enhances the final product. This wine is a case in point. As good as the other J offerings are, this one is simply deeper, more polished, more ethereal than its siblings. It is also a lot of sparkling wine and needs to be reserved for very special events when there are enthusiasts aplenty in the house. And given the prices being asked for Champagne and even for California sparkling wine of the same quality, this magnum is a veritable bargain.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

In 1986, Judy Jordan founded J Vineyards & Winery in order to craft the varietal and sparkling wines that have since become the essence of Russian River Valley expression. This viticultural area runs west through Sonoma County, following the river as it winds around rolling hills and through rich benchlands before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. The region's unique topography creates a rich diversity of soils, and the cool coastal climate prolongs the growing season, making it one of only a few places on earth ideal for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Other varietals thrive here, too. George Bursick, our winemaker, uses a combination of traditional and innovative winemaking techniques to craft Pinot Gris, Viognier and Vin Gris in true Russian River Valley style. In addition to our varietal wines, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have served as the base of our critically-acclaimed sparkling wines for 20 years now. We are dedicated to creating sparkling wines in the traditional method of Champagne, or mêthode champenoise. This labor-intensive philosophy results in sparkling wines of incredible depth, complexity and dazzling effervescence. Read less
