Le Macchiole Paleo Cabernet Franc 2001
External Reviews for Le Macchiole Paleo Cabernet Franc

Moderately saturated ruby. Cassis, plum and milk chocolate on the nose, lifted by a floral perfume. Sweet, dense and youthfully unevolved, with classic cabernet flavors of dark berries, graphite, and a touch of cedar. Broadens out impressively on the back end and shows increasing sweetness of fruit with extended aeration. This is a very supple version of Paleo; with less of the acid backbone of other recent vintages, it boasts a softer, if simpler, appeal.

Intense aromas of blackberry, rose and rosemary follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. Supersilky and caressing. A gorgeous wine. Cabernet Franc. Best after 2009.

The 2005 Paleo (Cabernet Franc) is impressive. Wild herbs, roasted coffee beans, new leather, minerals and dark fruit emerge from this long, refined wine. Although the intensity tapers off slightly on the mid-palate, this is an absolutely gorgeous wine loaded with style and personality. Still tightly wound, it needs further bottle age to reach its peak. It is arguably the most successful of the estatersquo;s 2005s. Anticipated maturity: 2009ndash;2017.

A full-throttle red, with lots of plum, berry and vanilla character and Indian spices underneath. Full, silky, wild and long. Cabernet Franc. Best after 2008.

Medium-deep ruby. Refined aromas of floral red berries and high-grade milk chocolate are somewhat overwhelmed by coconut and vanilla. Finely textured and lithe on the palate, with sneaky concentration to its redcurrant, raspberry, milk chocolate and mineral flavors. The long, nuanced finish features very fine tannins.

Red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of cherry, red berries and leather. Sweet, bright and focused, with very sound acidity framing the rich fruit flavors. Juicy and elegantly styled. This smooth and persistent red is one of the most successful wines of Italyrsquo;s 2002 vintage.

The estatersquo;s 2002 Paleo (100% Cabernet Franc) is an excellent effort for the vintage. It is a fairly compact Paleo with pretty aromatics and notes of smoke, tar, herbs and dark fruit on a medium-bodied frame. Although it displays good length and balance some rough edges remain and bottle aging will only help to a limited extent. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2017.
