Lorieux Chinon 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The Chinon appellation lies in the triangle between the Vienne and Loire departments. Famous for its red wines, the vines are planted on tuffeau, a chalky bedrock of variable hardness. The town of Chinon was the favourite residence of the Plantagenet king, Henry II, and it was in the Great Hall of the Château during the Hundred Years' War that Joan of Arc acknowledged the future king Charles VII. And of course the great Rabelais himself lived within spitting distance of Chinon, the man who once wrote: 'When I drink I think; and when I think I drink.' This delightful wine is made with due environmental respect or 'travail raisonnée' in every aspect of vineyard conduct involving minimal treatments, no use of fertilisers or herbicides. Leaf thinning is carried out in August in order to allow air to circulate amongst the grapes and to promote better ripening. A strict green harvest is also done to eliminate superfluous grapes. Classic taffeta-textured Chinon, perfume of sweet hay, violets and irises, silky smoky fruit, wild strawberries and cerise, springy acidity. The pleasure is all yours. This graceful savoury wine suits dishes as diverse as veal kidneys, leg of pheasant and grilled salmon.

A number of rivers join the Loire along its route through Touraine, the Cher, the Indre, the Vienne, the Cisse and the Brenne. The vineyards of Touraine are along the hillsides and terraces that border the rivers. The climatic influence of the Atlantic Ocean penetrates far inland via the river valleys and plays a beneficial role, essential to the development of the grapes. Not far from the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne, our vineyards are at the extreme west of Touraine, 20 minutes from Saumur and 40 minutes from Tours and Angers. The microclimate produces a remarkable variety of wild flora and fauna. It supports a number of Mediterranean species (orchids, Holm Oak etc?) and in the summer you can hear the crickets singing.
