Louis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay Wine 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This was reticent on the nose with lots of slow to emerge dried strawberry fruit and rich leafy notes. The combination of sweet maderization notes and drying tannins makes this seem quite advanced. It has nice balance in the mouth but is a bit short and reveals bitter tannins on the finish. There are come nice, complex notes of mushroom, coffee and cigar box on the mid-palate but this has seen better days. 87pts

The Latours have been vintners in Burgundy since the 17th century, slowly building a unique Domaine of 125 acres. Maison Louis Latour currently has the largest Grand Cru property in all of the Cote d’Or with a total of 71.58 acres. The vineyards extend from Chambertin in the north to Chevalier-Montrachet in the south and are solely planted with the two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All of the grapes from the vineyards we own are vinified and aged in the attractive cuverie of Château Corton Grancey in Aloxe-Corton. The winery was the first purpose-built cuverie in France and remains the oldest still-functioning. A unique rail-way system with elevators allows the entire wine-making process to be achieved by the use of gravity. This eliminates the threat of oxidation from unnecessary pumping of the must. Since 1985, Louis Latour has been selling the wines from its own vineyards under the name Domaine Louis Latour. The Latour family founded the ‘Maison de négoce’, an important shipping company, in 1797, and it is still based at 18 Rue des Tonneliers in Beaune to this day. The company is unique in Burgundy in that it is still family-owned and family-run, having been passed down from father to son for over ten generations. To celebrate our Bicentenary in 1797, we published a commemorative book and were admitted into the exclusive club of the Hénokiens. This club only accepts companies that are leaders in their respective fields, remain family owned, have a history of 200 years’ experience and still bear the name of their founder. There are only approximately 30 of these companies in the world. Maison Louis Latour ships its wines to over 60 countries worldwide. These world-class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs can be found on the most famous dining tables around the globe. Read less

one star above a cooking wine. It has Chardonnay elements, but all is in dis-balance.

Pretty straightforward light, bright cherry fruit type of wine...somewhat tasty for what it is. Was new at the wine store so tried this and its cousin a grenach noir, which i liked a little less. Reminds of beausolais style.

Not digging this, as pretty plain and uninspiring with some tart dark fruit on palate and some burn...sat in glass for a good 30 mins. It is young i agree, and maybe will mature over time, but hard to predict, at least for me. Grenache Noir is a new grape for me.

What a glorious wine. Aromas of berries, cinnamon and Indian spices follow through to a full-bodied palate with lovely soft tannins and a long, fruity finish.--Latour vertical. Drink now. –JS Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1949 Latour, Chateau 375ml

A Latour with a steely backbone and a savory character. Blueberries and currants with hints of violets. Full body, with a long and racy finish. The texture is very tight and racy. Classy for the vintage. James Suckling. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Latour, Chateau 750ml

Brillantes Ziegelrot.

This is Chateau Latour, which is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot with the balance being Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, although naturally this can vary greatly depending on the vintage. There are perhaps 18000 cases of the grand vin produced each year.
