Maison Jean Germain Puligny-Montrachet Corvee des Vignes 1988

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/104312 for £10. On the Cotes de Beaune in Burgundy there is a slope known as Mont Rachet [Bare Mountain ] between the villages of Puligny and Chassange [both of which have appended Montrachet to their names ] which is famous for white wines although there are a few reds. The commune of Puligny-Montrachet got appellation status for white wines only in 1939.There are 4 Grand Cru vineyards and 17 Premier Cru although my bottle is a village level wine from the family concern of Henri Germain. It is 100% chardonnay and spent a year in oak barrels. I started my bottle last night with my supper of fish and chips. It is a dry wine with plenty of a melon and peach style fruit and some citrus acidity on the finish. There is a hint, but no more than a hint, of vanilla and butter. In short, this is a lovely chardonnay that went well with the fish.

Henri Germain:
Henri Germain set up on his own back in 1973. It is a small domaine of around 7 hectares spread over several Burgundy appellations but based in Meursault and with a high reputation. It is now run by his son Jean Francois Germain
