Malk Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 Malk Family Vineyards is the product of a moderate and well balanced growing season. This wine is sure to give you everything you expect from Malk wines with a touch more refinement and polish. The gorgeous nose starts with floral notes of fresh cut flowers and lavender. Deeper, richer notes of ripe blackberry and currant soon prevail and are complimented with background hints of chocolate, spice, and cedar. The palate is as developed as any Cabernet we have made. The silky entry is seductive but not light. The mid-palate has great depth and concentration without being bulky and heavy, and the finish has an elegant presence that completes the entire experience.

Situated directly below the home of owners Brian Malk and Nancy Heitel, Malk Family Vineyard lies adjacent to the Fay Vineyard at the base of the Palisades, edging the valley floor on the eastern slopes of the Stags Leap District. Surrounded by a mixture of live oak and black oak trees, the vineyard property begins with a gentle slope at the base, rising dramatically to the Palisades in the background. The vines on this two acre vineyard are bilateral cordon and unilaterally trained on a vertical trellis system. The property was purchased in 1997 and is farmed with meticulous, hands-on care. Low yields and a philosophy to produce as a winegrower, ensure the fruit is of the highest quality from vintage to vintage. Read less

USA, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malk Family Vineyards, Stags Leap District AVA, Napa Valley, California, 2008 As I’ve stated before, I think Malk makes one of the best California Cabernet Sauvignons that one can buy under $500. And she only costs $72 when you get a case, which you should! N/ Violet and rose-petal reduction (truly flat out amazing). Clean, deep plum meat and blackberry jam. Flinty, dark soil. Aged cigar box. Sage. Light wafts of dry forest floor. Wow and wow. T/ Medium mouthfeel. Exceptionally clean. Blackcherries and dark chocolate. Soft red berries and plums. Beautifully integrated acids and a velvety minerality. Holy cow, again. Winemaker = Robbie Meyer Price = $72 from http://www.malkfamilyvineyards.com/ Only 256 cases made, act now if you want to dazzle someone. Astounding. 96 / 97 5 FULL Snooth glasses for sure!

A beautiful, well-balanced and silky Cab from the Stag's Leap Appellation. Small production and family owned (by a lovely family!) are two of my favourite things about Malk wines. GREAT value considering this heavenly wine and from whence it came. It's simply perfect from beginning to unfortunate end...

The 2007 Malk Cabernet Sauvignon was a blockbuster, but the 2008 is even better, and may well stand as ‘best of show’ against all premium Napa Cabs in the new vintage. It is a stunning achievement, intense and profound. Its nose opens to an enchanting floral bouquet with wafts of rose, honeysuckle, rosemary and lavender. Gusts of sea breeze, ripe raspberry and blackberry, along with scents of forest fern, mushroom, vanilla and dark chocolate add interest and depth. The palate awakens to radiant, robust tannins, which brush the mouth with plush velvet, creating instant readiness for a parade of flavors. Cherry and dark berries enter first, accompanied by lively pepper on the top, heralding a scrumptious array of bright fruit, featuring blackberry, cassis, dried fig, and raspberry. The fruit medley sustains as the palate gently dries, leading to a long, satisfying finish. At three hours, drafts of roses, oats and crème brûlée refresh and expand the aromatics, and the palate is enriched with refrains of chocolate-covered cherries, caramel, bacon, mushrooms and earthy savors that enhance complexity and balance. The only down side is that the secret is out. In just its sixth year, this limited edition beauty won’t last long after its release in early 2012. 95+ pts. Winefire (12/13/11).

I do have just one complaint about the 2008 Malk Cabernet Sauvignon . . . when the bottle is empty, it leaves you wondering where the next sip would have taken you. This complex and exciting wine is not to be ignored or forgotten. Buy it and let it entertain you for an entire enchanting evening as it takes you through rose gardens, vanilla fields, chocolate kisses (just sweet enough but not too sweet), then rosemary . . . lavender . . . blackberry . . . the magic scents of the forest . . . and more. More! 96 pts. Lone Star Lady 1/3/12
