Marcassin Marcassin Estate Pinot Nior Marcassin Vineyard 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Appearance: Deep plum/ruby/purple-colored to the edge. Aroma: Notes of boysenberries, mulberries and a hint of raspberries. Flavor: The site's minerality is well-positioned in the full-bodied flavors which continue the blue fruit invasion, so to speak, but with more forest floor and composty notes, and a complex, northern Cote de Nuits Vosne-Romanee or Morey-St.-Denis personality expressed in the gorgeous fruit. The sweetness of the tannin, the finish of 40+ seconds, and the great intensity this wine exhibits make it another compelling Pinot Noir from these two reclusive geniuses. Drink it over the next decade or more.

Marcassin is the wine produced by celebrated California cult winemaker Helen Turley and her husband, John Wetlaufer on the Sonoma Coast in California. The name, meaning “wild boar” is also the name of the 20-acre vineyard where the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes for her wines are grown. Two-thirds of the winery’s production is Pinot Noir. Production is limited to 2,500 to 3,000 cases a year, with the majority of the bottles sold only to exclusive mailing list members (there is an extensive wait list to receive them). The wines typically start at around $125 a bottle to the mailing list and sell for many more times that at auction. Until 2011, the wine itself was produced at Turley’s Martinelli winery in the Russian River Valley, but are now produced solely at Marcassin.  Read less
