Editorial Reviews for Melini Chianti Classico Riserva "La Selvanella"

This is surprisingly citrussy on the nose with early lemon oil and peach notes that are covered fairly quickly by more typical, if unusually bright and fruity, notes of red cherry and raspberries. The nose hints at leather and herb notes but is particularly about fruit today. With time, this does turn a bit funkier, more leathery, slightly nutty and a bit wild. This is smooth and supple on entry yet there is a base of finely managed tannins here holding up the rather dark fruit. There’s a light medicinal tone here that is sort of herbal and vague. The finish returns to a fruity profile full of darkish cherry fruit, a hint of bitter almond and balanced structural elements. Nothing out of a place and a fine wine list buy, but this is somewhat underwhelming. 88pts

Deceptive nomenclature - because it is Melini behind the fancy name - so has some pedigree (established 1705) in the Classic region of Tuscany. The nose is cheerfully cherry (if I may be permitted this alliterative) with some Mediterranean earth and herb; decant, and you will enjoy the bitter chocolate, cherry and youthful finesse of this wine. Great value! 90 points.

Red cherry, a little dust and black tea. light bodied with a nice acidity. combination of earth and fruit like characteristics. paired great with my Italian meal that evening.

Leathery and opens with nice, deep red fruit flavors. I like this!

Very acidic. Not a fan. Funky/cheese-type notes on nose and taste

one dimensional. very good marachino cherry finish though....nice silky mouthfeel. not very dry which was actually refreshing on a summer's night eating meat tortellini. reminds me a lot of a full bodied pinot noir.

Soft and elegant showing off how Sangiovese matures. Beautiful example of an older Classico Riserva

Granted the most prestigious award an Italian wine can receive, this 2006 Riserva was given Tre Bicchieri by the Gambero Rosso, who said “We gave La Selvanella three glasses for its huge personality and concentration.” A very unique wine indeed, Chianti Classico Riserva La Selvanella was the very first single vineyard Chianti when it debuted in 1969. The vineyard lies at 1,200 elevation where the direct sunlight and cool temperatures bring intensely flavored Sangiovese. Aged 30 months in oak cases this wine has dark, brooding aromas of black cherries, smoke, tar, leather and spices. A fully structured wine that shows deep concentration and long ageability. Grab some of this Tre Bicchieri beauty now, while it’s ON SALE!

This vineyard-designate Riserva is a delicate and medium-bodied wine with aromas of wild berry, white mineral and violets. The nose is subtle and subdued but the mouthfeel is more intense thanks to the wineandrsquo;s fresh acidity and long berry flavors.

A little tight right now, but thereandrsquo;s some beautiful blackberry, raspberry and floral character. Medium- to full-bodied, with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Best after 2009.

The estate's single-vineyards 2003 Chianti Classico La Selvanella Spent a whopping 30 months in French oak, something that is rarely seen these days. Dark, brooding aromas of smoke, tar, scorched earth, black cherries, leather and spices flow from this rich, large-scaled wine. The heat of the vintage has given this wine a nice plumpness to balance the tannins but the style remains decidedly imposing. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

Heady cherry scents introduce this mature Chianti. It feels rich in the middle, smooth and austerely tannic in the end. A clean and complex red for braised veal.
