Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti la Court 2013

External Review by We Speak Wine:

The 55-acre Tenuta Aluffi is one of the most prestigious estates in the southern part of Asti, near the town of Nizza Monferrato, a choice area for exceptional-quality Barbera. Within Aluffi is the La Court estate, with excellent soils of magnesium-rich calcareous marl and a beneficial south-southwest exposure. This jewel of vineyard land receives the fastidious attention of the Chiarlo family so that its old vines produce extraordinary grapes. Following fermentation in large oak casks, the wine is aged in oak for a minimum of 12 months. HARVEST NOTE: 2013 will be remembered as having the latest harvest in the last 20 years. A cold but average winter, with frequent snowfalls and rain which lasted from November to April; the vegetative cycle started with an excellent reserve of water, though 15-18 days late; while in Spring the temperature fell somewhat, resulting in a further delay in the vegetative state. Beautiful and warm days arrived in June, giving rise to a perfect bud-setting. The veraison began towards 7th -10th August, 15-20 days late, depending on the variety and locations; in August the weather was beautiful, with an excellent day/night temperature range, conditions that allowed a constant ripening with an excellent development of aromas. The harvest took place very late, comparable to historic vintages of the 70s and 80s, and we started picking the Moscato on 10th September and finished harvesting the Nebbiolo from Barolo on 22nd October; all the grapes arrived at the winery perfectly ripe and healthy. The white wines were particularly attractive, having highly marked aromas and a due to a pleasant acidity, great freshness. As for the reds, extraordinary results were obtained in the great terroirs and particularly in the vineyards with steep slopes, which enabled rainwater to drain off quickly. Nonetheless we are very happy with the quality achieved also on the other hillside positions: rich wines endowed with great freshness and highly marked aromas. TASTING NOTE: Shows forward aromas of violets and spice before ripe flavors of black plum, dark chocolate and wild cherry. The wine has coiled, tangy acidity and a velvety texture. FOOD PAIRING: Pairs well with red meat, sausage, game and tomato-based dishes such as pasta Bolognese. PH: 3.60 ACIDITY: 5.98 ABV: 13.98%

Our Philosophy is to produce wines whose characteristics faithfully represent that variety of provenance, as well as their terroir, but in which the hints of wood are never underscored; that they be rich, highly elegant and never nauseous wines. The wine brings with it a precious baggage of qualitative features, which derive from the grape variety and the terroir of provenance: we are fully committed to ensuring that all said characteristics remain integral and do not diminish or undergo modifications, thus we limit our actions to those strictly necessary, using delicate procedures, aware that every clarification, filtration or other intervention subtracts a part of the wine's qualitative characteristics. Pressing is carried out by means of soft presses so as not to tear the skins; fermentation comes about exclusively at controlled temperatures programmed for each wine, so as to preserve the precious perfumes and original flavours; the extraction of the anthocyans and polyphenols from black grapes is done by means of a very delicate system involving automatic rotary sprinklers that shower must onto the skins. As for our white wines, among the most innovative actions, we would mention the one adopted for Gavi: cold maceratyion of a part of the cortese grapes before pressing, so as to favour a more marked and delicate extraction of their perfumes. As regards red wines, of great importance for us is the choice of wood, capacity and age of the barrels used, all of which in French oak. We use oak tuns for the fermentation of our highly prized reds and barrels of different sizes for their refinement. For instance: 225-litre barrels for Montemareto and in part for La Court Barbera d'Asti (of which 50% is instead refined in fermentation tuns); 700-litre barrels for the Barolo and Barbaresco crus; 5000-litre barrels for Barbera d'Asti Cipressi della Court, Le Orme, classic Barolo and Barbaresco. All our top-rank reds (Barolo, Barbaresco and relative crus, Barbera d'Asti La Court , Montemareto) are bottled without having previously undergone filtration, so as to maintain integral both their original wealth of bouquet and taste. The “long-life” reds undergo lengthy and adequate refinement in the bottle, away from the light, at a constant temperature of 14- 16°C so as to enable them slowly to develop heady fragrances and to deliciously harmonise their flavours. It is precisely in this stage that the greatness of a wine comes to the fore: thus we delay putting our crus of red wines on sale until after the deadline foreseen by the individual Production Regulations, so that they may arrive on the wine-lover's table ready to be appreciated to the utmost. Following fermentation in large oak casks, the wine is aged in oak for a minimum of 12 months. HARVEST NOTE: The year 2012 will be remembered for its dry, hot summer, which affected many Italian regions, and for the lowest yields of the last 50 years. Piedmont had a winterspring weather pattern that was very peculiar: the absence of any significant rainfall in December and January, though with standard temperatures, followed by a truly abnormal February. Freezing temperatures with minimums of around 20° for a period of 10 days and exceptionally heavy snowfall for a total of about 100 cm, there then followed a very rainy spring, especially from mid April to May 20th. These rainfalls created a precious water reserve in the soil, which was of great help during the 3 months of summer drought, characterized by very high temperatures, especially in August; said weather conditions were experienced throughout Italy. Despite the above mentioned water reserve, in late August the vineyards planted on calcareous and sandy soil and exposed to the south and west began to suffer when, unexpectedly on September 1st, 2nd and 3rd, there arrived three days of heavy rainfall (average 80 mm) that were a real godsend, the benefit of which is incalculable and changed the fate of the harvest, contributing significantly to a very balanced ripening, particularly favoured by the meager quantity. TASTING NOTE: Shows forward aromas of violets and spice before ripe flavors of black plum, dark chocolate and wild cherry. The wine has coiled, tangy acidity and a velvety texture. FOOD PAIRING: Pairs well with red meat, sausage, game and tomatobased dishes such as pasta Bolognese. AGING: 1 year half in large barrels and half in Allier barriques PH: 3.66 ACIDITY: 6.27 g/l ABV: 14.18%
