Mollydooker 'The Boxer' Shiraz 2017

External Review:

Just in! A wonder from down under, Mollydooker wines were launched with the 2004 vintage and were an instant cult classic, producing broodingly rich, decadent offerings that are snapped up as quickly as they are put on the shelf. This 2016 hasn't been scored yet but the pedigree is undeniable. Grapes for this year's The Boxer come from prime vineyard blocks including the Mollydooker home vineyard in McLaren Vale with some additional fruit from Langhorn Creek and Currency Creek all in South Australia. The slightly cooler climate grapes from Langhorne and Currency Creek, add a floral lift and elegance. All of the grapes are sustainably grown. Parcels were vinified separately, barrel fermented and aged in 100% American oak, 42% new. This powerful wine is vibrant, complex and jam packed with a kaleidoscope of flavors. Chocolate, plum and licorice just to name a few; all beautifully wrapped in bright berry fruit on the mid-palate. Subtle oak elements and flawless tannins, intertwine with the fruit ever so gracefully. This Shiraz finishes with a persistent length and is an absolute joy to drink. Don't miss it, it's limited!

Fruit forward (but not a bomb) and spicy and an overall pleasure at the price point.

Very enjoyable. Don't forget to do the "Mollydooker Shake." Nice video on their website demonstrating the technique. Powerful & Full with a long finish. Have a bottle of Blue Eyed Boy that I can't wait to open based on how much I enjoyed the Boxer!

My first taste of "The Boxer" and a pleasant experience it was. This wine is perfect for drinking on its own in convivial ambiance with its deep, rich, dense and noticeably sweet, candied Maraschino cherry dominance of the palate. Very Oz, with the power and majesty of a usurper of the throne, this wine has, in my opinion, less elegance or finesse than (say) a top rank Côte-Rotie - if that's what you're seeking. But this does not mean the wine is not very, very good; simply that it is what it is and is good at what it is. Delicious!

Vintage Report: Vintage began slightly earlier than usual on the 23rd February and went on to be one of our most exciting and challenging vintages to date. An unseasonably dry spring produced an early budburst and still conditions gave the fruit a chance to set in beautifully. Heat spikes in January followed by 11 days over 35°C/95°F in the first 23 days of February, meant that careful monitoring of the vine’s health using the Marquis Vineyard Watering Programme™ was integral in producing high quality grapes. Despite the seasonal challenges, we harvested a total of 1026.24 tonnes and processed 72 individual parcels of fruit. Due to our scrupulous Fruit Weight™ guidelines and our commitment to excellence, this year’s fruit did not achieve the required Fruit Weight™ necessary to make the Enchanted Path, Carnival of Love and Velvet Glove. On the bright side, this meant that some incredible fruit was used to make our 2015 Lefty and Family wines. Combining quality fruit with some very clever and methodical winemaking, the results are simply outstanding. Winemaker Tasting Notes: This powerful wine is vibrant, complex and jam packed with a kaleidoscope of flavours. Chocolate, plum and liquorice just to name a few; all beautifully wrapped in bright berry fruit on the mid-palate. Subtle oak elements and flawless tannins, intertwine with the fruit ever so gracefully. This Shiraz finishes with a persistent length and is an absolute joy to drink. Alc/Vol: 16.5% Residual sugar: 3.2 pH: 3.63

The Boxer Shiraz gives a deep garnet-purple color and aromas of creme de cassis, blackberry preserves and mocha plus an undercurrent of vanilla and cedar. The palate is very generously fruited, offering a whopping mouthful of spiced blackberry flavors with a low to medium level of silky tannins, enlivening acid and a long finish.
