Monte Antico Rosso 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

85% sangiovese, 10% cabernet sauvignon, 5% Merlot Interestingly this is both dark and leathery as well as being spicy and bright on the nose with plenty of black currant and slightly jammy strawberry fruit. very focused on entry, with a whiff of oak accompanying the taut berry fruit. the tannins are very well managed here and the acid as well offering a mouthfeel that is precise and shows unusual cut for a wine for this price. Mineral and leather notes emerge on the backend along with some dried herb and fruit notes before this fades on the moderately long and nervous finish. The wood does become more prominent on the nose here but what really impresses with this wine is energy it retains and the nervous texture that one rarely finds at this price point. This remains a fabulous little wine that just lacks a bit of flavor intensity. 88pts

Monte Antico means ancient mountain in Italian. In the world of fine wines, a unique combination of quality, reliability and value since 1977, this label belongs to Neil & Maria Empson, who launched the Super Tuscan five years after founding the Neil Empson Selections. It was their special affinity to the heartland of Italy that led them to make their very own mark on Tuscan soil: with the Maestro of Italian winemakers, Franco Bernabei. They have styled the Tuscan grape per eccellenza and expressed its ultimate potential, complimenting it with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The best selections are cherry picked according to harvest conditions in the individual terroirs and microclimates. The blend for Monte Antico is 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. The best selections are blended and aged 1 year in oak (80% in Slovenian barrels, 20% in barrique) with at least 6 months bottle age. This wine is consistently one of Italy’s better values. This is a 2009 Tuscan Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Savignon blend. It has a deep ruby hue with a mid to tight rim variation. Bold fruity notes of plum and black cherry with a slight hint of vanilia and coffee and balanced acidity. The time for this wine is now to 2016. Best served chilled to 56 degrees, and served with a veal parmigiana with pasta dish.

Italian blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is dry but not overly dry. There is medium body with few layers of complexity. The nose is jam and pepper with a palate of jam, plums, and peppers. I am barely able to say a medium finish. Not a bad wine for weekday Italian night.

Tuscany, ItalyMonte Antico Rosso Toscana is a beautiful Tuscan red wine made by maestro Franco Bernabei for importer Neil Empson. Meaning "ancient mountain" in Italian, this super Tuscan blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot has offered a unique combination of quality and value since its launch in 1977. The grapes come from vineyards ranging up to 1500 ft above sea level. James Suckling rated this vintage 90 points!Monte Antico is a beautiful dark ruby in color. Its bouquet of leather, earth, herbs, black cherries, licorice and plums is confirmed on the medium to full-bodied palate - round, spicy, elegant, attractively fruity and extremely versatile. The wine was aged for one year in French and Slavonian oak followed by 6 months in bottle. The finish is rich, long and polished.Enjoy Monte Antico over the next 3-5 years with veal, pasta, risotto, osso bucco, and aged cheeses.

A perpetual Best Buy and a frequent selection for the Top 100 lists, Monte Antico is a Tuscan gem that over delivers vintage after vintage. Made from a selection of Tuscany’s finest vineyard sites, a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot, Monte Antico is Neil & Maria Empson’s tribute to Tuscany. Importers of exceptional Italian wines for over thirty years the Empsons have grown a strong affinity with Italian wines and its terrior. Maestro Franco Bernabei does the honors as winemaker, selecting the best grape lots, fermenting slowly and then aging the finished wine 1 year in oak (80% in Slavonian, 20% French) and at least 6 months in the bottle to achieve a graceful balance of voluptuous berry tones and a soft forward style that’s ideal with food. James Suckling scored this 91 points saying ""This is one of the best value Italian reds on the market. Medium to full body with dried cherry, milk chocolate and light chili aromas and flavors. Long and delicious. Caressing mouthfeel. Bright acidity. A blend of sangiovese, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Drink now. Screw cap."

Candied cherry and strawberry notes mingle with tobacco and bitter almond flavors in this slim red. The tannins have grip. Drink now through 2017. 3,500 cases imported. -BS Monte Antico-a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon-is a great value choice that shows medium build in the mouth followed by bright notes of cherry and wild berry. The mouthfeel is smooth and spicy, but largely driven by simple, red fruit nuances.
