Nicholls Wines Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Bien Nacido Vineyards is located in the Santa Maria Valley of Santa Barbara County (of Sideways fame). The Pacific Ocean’s cooling effect on the climate there yields rich ripe fruit with terrific natural acidity and is perfect for producing balanced, elegant wines. The 2005 Pinot Noir has a deep cherry nose and is full of spice and smoky overtones. The smoky notes and cherry continue on the palate, evolving into darker fruits, which are complimented by soft oak tannins and lingering spice. Good extraction, concentration, terrific acidity and layered tannic structure all combine to make this a wonderful example of a cool climate Pinot Noir. Gold medal winner in the S.F. Chronicle's 2008 Wine Competition, $35-and-over Pinot Noir category. This wine beat out Pinot's by Byron ($39, Silver) and La Zarre ($50, Bronze), both of whom sourced their fruit from the very same vineyard as us. A truly special wine at an exceptional price.

Good tannins, with very rich powerful fruits - raspberries. A very fruit forward, opulent pinot, that finishes well on the tannins.
