Parusso Barolo Mariondino 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

93 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): The 2010 Barolo Mariondino is quite pretty. Dark red cherries, plums, dried flowers, new leather and spices flesh out in a racy, expressive Barolo with lovely mid-palate pliancy and depth. The Mariondino has a bit more depth than the straight Barolo, which serves to balance the whole clusters nicely. The 2010 closes up pretty quickly in the glass and is likely headed for a long period of dormancy... another fascinating, intriguing Barolo from Marco Parusso. Drink: 2020-2030. (Jan 2014)

AWE blind tasting - passionfruit, particular French oak, vanilla, smoke, vanilla pipe tobacco, artificial fruit aromas, slightly chewy, innocuous, anonymous, 82-83

Warm and plummy on the nose with a touch of toasty and actually quite smoky wood adding a nice accent to the jammy fruit that gains a nice strawberry tone. There are nuanced notes of fennel fronds, roasted meat, menthol cigarettes and a growing note of perfumy wood. On entry there is a touch of woody sweetness followed by lots of tannin leaving the palate a bit lean and astringent with nice red fruit notes. Once you get past that initial burst of sweetness this is actually very dry and while there is some nice fruit lurking it’s simply not enough to handle the tannins which cut the finish short. This is a disappointment considering previous showings of this wine. Drink 2009-2014 85 pts

The nose was a bit reticent at first with a light note of oak over cherries in alcohol, strong licorice and spice over lovely notes of slate and asphalt. Mouthfilling with great acidity and almost resolved tannins, a great depth of black fruits, still a tinge of oak through the mid-palate and a bit tough as it airs but with refreshing minerality on the end of the palate and leading into the finish. Showing less evolved than the last bottle and less satisfying. The direct and almost piercing acidity really adds much needed lift and vibrancy to compensate for a slight heaviness imparted by the remaining oak notes. This is still young though and if the last, more advanced, bottle is any indication this will continue to improve.

The nose was elegant and floral with cherry and strawberry fruits, herbs, and cedar box. On the palate an exotic mix of ginger, spice and orange rind mixed with its red fruits and hints of vanilla to create a truly unique experience. The finish was long, filled with spicy ginger and sweet floral notes. (94 points)

The nose showed crushed red berries, sometimes tart and sometimes sweet, with floral notes and mint. On the palate it was rich with dark, almost black fruits and spice notes. The tannins were barely perceptible against its masses of dark fruits. The finish lingered long with hints of pepper adding an interesting layer to this dark beauty. (92 points)

The nose was highly expressive with cherry and earthy woodland notes up front, backed by hints of spice, mint and brown sugar. On the palate, it was full-bodied and velvety, showing pure red fruits and earthy notes, which nearly masked this wine’s fine structure. Tannin was only perceptible on the finish as dried red fruits clung to the palate. (93 points)

The nose showed dark red berries, spice box, dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, it was soft with a diluted feel, showing tart red fruit, cedar and angular tannins. The finish showed fading red berries. (86 points)

Volatile acidity masks the nose; very green mouth with strong acidity, wood, green apple, and anise.

Slightly corked bottle, but there was still a bright cherry fruit nose with some chemical notes. For a 20 year old wine there was a lot of acidity with a bit of tar and a floral note.

The 2005 Barolo Mariondino-Bussia-Le Coste-Mosconi Vendemmia is an elegant, harmonious offering. Made in a weightless, ethereal style, the wine reveals layers of plums, figs, new leather, menthol, spices and herbs. This medium-bodied Barolo offers outstanding length and a refined, finessed finish that makes it fairly accessible even at this young age. The wine doesnt appear to have the stuffing to be a long-term ager, but it should offer highly pleasurable drinking to age 15 or so. In 2005 Parusso waited to harvest all of his fruit until after the October rains had passed. According to Parusso, the tannins were actually riper in 2005 than 2004. This 2005 Barolo is somewhat of a departure for Parusso, as he blended the juice from all of his single-vineyards into one wine prior to bottling, a decision he says was made in order to deliver a high-quality wine to the consumer at a fair price in light of todays economic climate. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020.

This wine possesses a very classy Barolo, scent of dried roses, oranges, liquorices, and red berries. It is resolved and fluid on the palate with impressions of tobacco and mint, accented by a deep and long in the finish.
