Paul Hobbs Merlot Napa Valley Michael Black Vineyard 2004

External Review:

Wine Advocate ReviewThe medium-bodied 2000 Merlot Michael Black Vineyard is an elegant, light effort, exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of black fruits, fudge, and licorice. It is shorter, softer, and more accessible than the 1999, it will drink well for 7-8 years.Wine Tasting NotesDeep red/black color. Aromas of blackberry, cinnamon, cedar, and dried roses exude from the glass. On the palate the wine reveals richness wrapped with fruit and milk chocolate flavors, made more intriguing with a trace of spice and earth. Medium-bodied, this is an elegant wine that is enjoyable now and will be for years to come.

Paul wasn’t satisfied just becoming Head Enologist of Robert Mondavi’s Opus One in 1981, or becoming Vice-President/Winemaker of Simi Winery in 1989. No, he wanted to create his very own grapes, on his own land. This passion led to the creation of Paul Hobbs Winery in 1991. Focused in the Russian River Valley, each harvest is meticulously captured so as to extract the very best from each grape. This passion started with only three wines in the winery’s repertoire: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but the winery quickly grew to produce over a dozen wines. Today, Paul Hobbs still consults other wineries around the globe, including wineries in Chile, Argentina, and Hungary. Read less

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. There are parts of this wine of exceptional beauty, and they outshine the lesser bits. Look to its rich, ripe black cherry fruit and its nuances of leather and caramel to find the joy here, but be aware that the tiniest bit of spritz is also evident along with a well-hidden but not totally disguised sharp edge to the fruit. Both suggest that the wine's potential for another decade in the cellar is to be questioned, but there is no question that it drinks well with a center cut rib roast today.
