Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark, leathery and deep on the nose with rich aromas of macerated fruits and flowers. Firm on entry and immediately showing a blend of power and polish with dark earthy plum and blackcurrant flavors wedded to a tense, firm yet transparent mouth feel. This is already showing hints of tobacco and dried fruit, adding complexity and nuance on the palate which gains hints of boysenberry, vanilla and nutmeg with air. While complex there’s not tremendous depth to the flavors here which turn black fruited and licorice toned on the firm finish, where the structure here powers on for quite some time. This is a serious wine at the price point and one that should be able to improve in the cellar over the short to mid-term, say 2 to 4 years. May underwhelm some who are looking for more at this price point but this is a terrific wine for the money. 87pts

The fruit is fresh and the nose and palate are alive. Blackberry, dark cherry, blueberry with mocha, oak, vanillin from oak, good spice and pepper notes lead to a juicy medium bodied aftertaste that is slightly chewy and lingering. Well done - again. Drink now - Paul 88 points

Smooth red wine, inoffensive, but nothing spectacular either. Good everyday wine. Would buy again. Kick on first sip but mellows out with further drinking.

The first day this wine was pretty awful--very very bitter. On the second day though, it was so, so much better. It was smooth, but with a hint of peppery spice. So good!

This one got better from day 1 to day 2 to day 3. Day 1 it was not very good at all and I could understand the previous reviewer. When I threw it in the fridge on day 3 and poured a glass it was actually quite nice, tasted like a Shiraz should with red fruits, some dark fruit, and a little pepper on the semi-dry finish. Considering the three day average I give it 3 glasses, but it was a very enjoyable 4 on day 3. I would encourage anyone who buys a bottle of this to open, then put a bottle topper in it, and let it sit for a day or two, then try it.

The Cabernet and Shiraz blends begin with the 2006 Shiraz (70%) - Cabernet Sauvignon (22%) ldquo;Koonunga Hill.rdquo; Purple-colored, the wine offers meaty black currant, blackberry, and blueberry aromas. On the palate the wine exhibits remarkable focus and structure for its humble price. The fruit is grapy and primary as well as intensely flavored. It should evolve for several years and drink well through 2022 if not longer. It is a fantastic value.

Penfolds has been producing the Shiraz/Cabernet Koonunga Hill for 30 years and it remains an excellent bargain (early releases cost about $1 a bottle). The 2004, an outstanding blend of 62% Shiraz and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, was aged in old 300 liter hogsheads. Its dense purple color is accompanied by scents of blackberries, truffles, old leather, licorice, and pepper. Heady ripeness, a fleshy mouthfeel, decent acidity, and a long finish suggest it should drink well for 10ndash;12 years.

The 2007 Koonunga Hill Shiraz (75%) ndash; Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) was aged for eight months in seasoned oak. Purple-colored, it has an expansive perfume of blue and black fruits. On the palate it is supple-textured, ripe, and layered. This surprisingly elegant wine will evolve for several years and provide pleasure through 2017.
