Pian Dell'Orino Brunello di Montalcino 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass with warm, seductive black cherries, flowers, tobacco, minerals and underbrush. The interplay between the richness of the fruit and a classic sense of structure is totally spellbinding in this mysterious, dark Brunello. I love the element of sensuality here. The intensity of the fruit builds like waves towards the inevitable, luxurious, palate staining finish. This is simply a wine that won’t be denied. It is remarkable in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026...Pian dell’Orino is one of the most exciting, dynamic wineries in Montalcino. Proprietors Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Erbach have turned out two utterly fabulous wines that readers will not want to miss...97." WA 05/2011

The estate is adjacent to the Biondi Santi property. This area has a long history of being particularly suited for growing grapes for high quality wines. Our love for Tuscany and passion for viticulture binds us particularly to this land, our vines and the resulting wines. Our wines come from four different vineyards that have a total area of 6 hectares. Right from the beginning we studied the soil and the structure of each vineyard in order to fully understand its characteristics. Fossils, petrified shells and chalk sediment all testify to the earth’s evolutions and recount marine flooding and periods of drought in the area. The research and the significance dedicated to our land means that we now cultivate it in such a way as to make wines with a very distinct personality that reflect the innate character of each vineyard in a clear and recognisable way. The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a powerful, muscular wine endowed with plenty of dark fruit, minerals, spices and French oak. The balance here is exceptional, as everything is in the right place. Firm yet silky tannins frame the finish with a classy elegance that is tough to find in Montalcino. Suggestions of smoke, earthiness, tar and leather linger on the long, powerful close. Ideally this Brunello needs a few years of bottle age for all of the elements to meld together, but it is already clearly a very special wine. Pian dellrsquo;Orinorsquo;s 2004 Brunello saw an incredible seven weeks of fermentation on the skins, followed by a whopping 40 months in oak, equal parts cask and medium-size barrels. Pian dell-Orino, is a small estate owned by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach. The winery sits next to Biondi-Santi, in the heart of Montalcino. A total of six hectares of organically farmed vineyards also includes plots in the southern part of the Brunello zone. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2024.

The excellent, dense plum/purple-colored 1997 Brunello di Montalcino offers up sweet scents of damp earth, cedar, tobacco, and spice box. In the mouth, plums and cherries also make an appearance. This ripe, lush, medium to full-bodied, textured, concentrated Brunello should drink well for a decade.
