Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Great nose of cinnamon cherries barnyard funkiness and slight floral quality. Takes a while to show its true colors but with time it opens up into a lovely delicate version of Barbaresco that will only add complexity with time.

Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations. Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produces in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. Two weeks before harvest there were a couple of days of rain 13/088 With sweet woodsy forest floor aromas on the nose, this is quite aromatic, with a lovely floral top note, integrated spice accents, fine apple skin, red lingonberry, and wild strawberry aromas. Not shy with the alcohol in the mouth, this is smooth and polished on the palate with good power and length, and real drive from the tannins, though this seems deceptively small today with astringent red berried fruit and a little hint of forest floor bitterness on the palate. Tight and in need of additional time in the bottle. 89pts

Sweet herbs, slightly roasted red fruit fruit, cocoa, and an incipient truffle note appear on the nose. With sweet fruity on entry, soft tannins, big size, and great acids this makes quite an impression in the mouth but the tannins show a slight bitter edge, the sweetness comes from the rather high alcohol, and the fruit is decidedly simple in the mouth with lots of small red berry fruit that lacks detail and complexity. Fine but this is a bit short and less interesting than usual. 87pts

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2014 is as expected: cherries and cranberries on the nose with considerable acidity (partially due to the ordinary vintage in 2014) and medium tannin (this is, of course 100% Nebbiolo, but slightly lighter in style than Barolo, but most of you already know that well); Flavor is intense with heavy tannin (oak) ceiling and cherry floor. The length is good - quite long - with plenty of acidity for those al forno dishes such as Lasagna or Pizza. My preference is not for too, too much tannic pucker, and this wine has plenty - but it comes with the territory. Lots of almond and peach pit bitterness - again, as with the territory so to speak. This will "blow off" with decanting or air exposure for an hour or two. A wine to hold for another five years. Good Italian machismo here. 90.

Light red fruit on the nose with a touch of a sweet floral note. Red fruited in the mouth with notible acidity with a long drying finish.

Thin, tannic, too early to drink and lacking depth

A lighter more elegant Barbaresco, hints of leather, cigar and blackcherry. All back and short on front. Wait for it. This wine needs to be decanted in 2014 but not short of enjoyable. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2009 displays character of a well balanced, age-able, 14.5% alc. nebbiolo. Earthy now but balanced and appreciated. I would love to taste this Barbaresco again in 2018. -William at Barolo

Barbaresco is a dry, elegant, full-bodied red wine, rich in tannin, with a very complex nose. At maturity, when it has fully developed for a few years, it reveals aromas of dry flowers, violets, white truffles, anise and more. In its youth it is closed in the mouth with nice, fruity aromas and a spicy, tannic finish. At maturity, the complexity of flavors opens up and the finish becomes smoother. Traditionally drunk with game, meat, fowl, polenta, fonduta and white truffle dishes of the Piedmont, Barbaresco is a rich complement to many foods. The wine is long on the palate and, once opened, a bottle can be drunk over the course of three or four days. The best serving temperature is around 18°C (65°F). - Winery

The sweet cherry, tar and menthol flavors quickly concede to stiff tannins in this beefy red, which is lively, with a mouthwatering finish of savory, minerally accents. Best from 2017 through 2027.
