Quinta Do Carrasqueiro Douro 2004

Member Review by ryanopaz:

Very pale yellow in color. The nose is candy like with sweettart characteristics. Fruit driven with an exotic floral quality, though difficult to pin down. Medium acidity with a full mouth feel and a lingering finish. The wine is odd, but intriguing and though I'm not entirely sure what to make of it I am drawn back to it for more. Peaches are left on the palate long after you swallow, though in the beginning, I can only think of the smell of Papaya and candy. Very exotic and worth a look. 3.5/5 [NR]

12.5% alcohol - Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca Deep marroonish and very dark. On the nose wet slate, earth, leather, and white peppers, with black cherry and anise showing as it opens up. Strong acidity with medium weight tannins. The palate shows underripe raspberry flavors , sour, and is hollow. This wine is more delicate with only 12.5 alcohol, and while it's nose is rich and inviting the palate seems to leave these flavors behind. With it's strong acidity it did pair well with a lamb and parsnip dish I made. 3/5 [NR]

12.5% alcohol - Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca Clear and brilliant inky black rouge that reminds of me a dried rose. Black or cooked cherries, pepper and wet earth on the nose. Intense acidity with medium tannins. And although I find the nose to be quite intriguing, a consistent question as to whether I smell herbs underneath the rich fruit forward aroma, it completely overtook the flavor of the wine. The palate only expressed a gentle pepper finish with slight green pepper flavor in the beginning. I barely picked up a fruit flavor nor the same richness I found on the nose. It was a lovely wine, gentle like a rose petal itself, but better paired with something of equal delicacy. Rich dishes will only overwhelm it, killing the slight tones you find on the palate.
