Quintessa Bordeaux Red Blend 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The Quintessa opens with beautiful complexity, perfume and nuance on the nose. In the glass, the wine amplifies with time and a quiet entry builds to a structured, solid mid-palate with dense black fruit. Its long finish unfolds with exquisitely supple tannins and a caress of sweet fruit.

THE ESTATE "In 1989, Valeria and I found the property that would become Quintessa, a remarkable estate in the heart of the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. With 280 acres, it was the last great undeveloped property in Napa Valley and had all the characteristics of a great wine estate: rolling hills, many different microclimates and a vast diversity of soil types. Now with nearly fifteen years of growth, the vines have lost their youthful exuberance and have developed into a balanced vineyard that needs little manipulation to produce low yields and concentrated flavors." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor The Vineyard's Diversity Defines Quintessa "The fact that the property at Quintessa had never been planted to grapes before spoke to the vivacity of the soil and the absence of grape pests. But it was amazing the diversity of the land that convinced us of Quintessa's potential to be one of the truly great wine estates of the world. The estate includes a valley, a lake, a river, five hills, four microclimates and numerous different soil types. Few vineyards anywhere encompass such diversity." Valeria Huneeus Vineyard Master/Proprietor THE WINE "Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. Our goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each year. In broad terms, Quintessa is a red meritage wine. The vineyard's diversity provides us wide stylistic options for the wine. Fruit from each component block of Quintessa is harvested, sorted, then gravity fed into either oak or stainless steel fermentation tanks. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, each block wine is aged separately for up to two years in french oak barrels in our caves. After this ageing period the components are brought together and the final Quintessa blend is created. The wine is then bottled and laid down for yet another year before release. Although each vintage is unique, we have discovered that finesse and elegance best express the character of the vineyard and as such, we blend for harmony, balance, and length of flavors. Above all, our objective is to make Quintessa a delicious wine that is complementary to food." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor Read less

95 points - Wine Enthusiast" A very fine Cab from the estate, which is in the north-central part of the Rutherford appellation. Judging from the tannins, its too youthful to drink now, with a tight, astringent mouthfeel and fleshy, unintegrated oak. But the flavors are extraordinary. They flood the mouth with the essence of Cabernet, with ripe blackberries, black currants, raspberries and mocha, and the spicy finish lasts for a full minute. Give it until 2013, and it should provide great drinking through 2019, at least." (6/1/2010) 91 points - Robert Parker"The 2007 looks to be one of Quintessa-s stronger efforts in a number of years. Very accessible and drinkable now, it should age nicely for 15 or more years." (12/09)90 points Stephen Tanzer's International "Good bright, deep ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, loam and chocolatey oak; liqueur-like but not cooked. Broad, dense and sweet, with lush, ripe black raspberry and chocolate flavors. Finishes with broad, dusty, oak-driven tannins. A bit chunky and very ripe and sweet for this bottling: more classic Napa Valley in style than most past vintages." -Wine Cellar, May/Jun 10

The flagship wine of the Huneeus Family of Napa Valley, Quintessa is a blend of Bordeaux variety grapes from their estate vineyard right in Napa's Rutherford Bench region. Wine Enthusiast Magazine rated it 95 points and said "A very fine Cab from the estate, which is in the north-central part of the Rutherford appellation.
