Quintessa Red 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

San Francisco Chronicle 'Top 100 Wine of 2008': Agustin Huneeus' project attracts top talent: Winemaker Charles Thomas got a hand from consultants Aaron Pott and Michel Rolland for this flagship wine blend of classic Bordeaux varieties from Quintessa's biodynamic and organically farmed vineyards. Its beauty is evident on the complex nose: ripe plum, dusty berry, earth and dried fennel give way to a mouthful of concentrated dark fruit, cassis and vanilla on a ripe, subtle structure.

THE ESTATE "In 1989, Valeria and I found the property that would become Quintessa, a remarkable estate in the heart of the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. THE ESTATE "In 1989, Valeria and I found the property that would become Quintessa, a remarkable estate in the heart of the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. With 280 acres, it was the last great undeveloped property in Napa Valley and had all the characteristics of a great wine estate: rolling hills, many different microclimates and a vast diversity of soil types. Now with nearly fifteen years of growth, the vines have lost their youthful exuberance and have developed into a balanced vineyard that needs little manipulation to produce low yields and concentrated flavors." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor The Vineyard's Diversity Defines Quintessa "The fact that the property at Quintessa had never been planted to grapes before spoke to the vivacity of the soil and the absence of grape pests. But it was amazing the diversity of the land that convinced us of Quintessa's potential to be one of the truly great wine estates of the world. The estate includes a valley, a lake, a river, five hills, four microclimates and numerous different soil types. Few vineyards anywhere encompass such diversity." Valeria Huneeus Vineyard Master/Proprietor THE WINE "Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. Our goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each year. In broad terms, Quintessa is a red meritage wine. The vineyard's diversity provides us wide stylistic options for the wine. Fruit from each component block of Quintessa is harvested, sorted, then gravity fed into either oak or stainless steel fermentation tanks. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, each block wine is aged separately for up to two years in french oak barrels in our caves. After this ageing period the components are brought together and the final Quintessa blend is created. The wine is then bottled and laid down for yet another year before release. Although each vintage is unique, we have discovered that finesse and elegance best express the character of the vineyard and as such, we blend for harmony, balance, and length of flavors. Above all, our objective is to make Quintessa a delicious wine that is complementary to food." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor Read less

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine ReviewRated 90In is hard not to be taken in by the lovely, sweet oak perfumes that take the early lead here, yet there is plenty of bright, young fruit beneath its vanillin veneer, and the wine proves to be fairly complete. Only a slight last-minute drop-off in fruit holds it back from higher award just now, but we do not rule out its chances for better as its knits together and hopefully expands with a stay of a few years in the cellar.Wine Tasting NotesThe 2005 Quintessa opens with beautiful complexity, perfume and nuance on the nose. In the glass, the wine amplifies with time and a quiet entry builds to a structured, solid mid-palate with dense black fruit. Its long finish unfolds with exquisitely supple tannins and a caress of sweet fruit.
