Ramey Annum Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

A new release for us, this represents our version of a “winemaker’s wine.” Having spent so much time working in Bordeaux and visiting Burgundy, the Loire and the Rhone, I’m deeply steeped in French winemaking tradition, including their orientation toward the growing site or region. Thus, all our wines are either vineyard designates or regional blends. While Annum is an appellation wine, it is the one blend we make each year that allows us to select from a range of vineyards to make the best blend possible that vintage. This inaugural release is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% each Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The vineyards chosen include the J. Davies Vineyard on the Schramsberg Estate (61%), the Larkmead Vineyard (34%), and Somerston Vineyard (5%).

Ramey Wine Cellars:
David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking... “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. Dark and inky with a slight brown edge. Initial hit of berries followed by mint and wood aromas. Big with lots of tannin right away but after some time decanting rounded out with a nice raisin and dark berry flavor. Smooth, velvety with a hint of heat in the back of the throat on the super long finish. Great potential with more time in the bottle or definitely decant if drinking now.

Offers a baseline rich earthiness to the dried currant beefy herb and cedar flavors ending with chewy tannins and notes of anise and cedar. Ends with drying tannins. Best from 2014 through 2024. 386 cases made. -JL Wine Spectator.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is a big, super-ripe wine. This is a decidedly opulent style of Cabernet. Personally, I prefer some of the other wines in the lineup, as the Annum is especially flashy in 2008. Endless layers of dark fruit crescendo to the juicy, intensely rich finish. As outstanding as this is today, it will be even better in a few yearsandrsquo; time. The 2008 is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot from J. Davies and Pedregal. Anticipated maturity: 2013andndash;2023.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum also improved dramatically from last year. Deep, sweet black currant, blackberry, camphor, truffle and graphite aromas jump from the glass of this full-bodied effort. With additional texture and layers as well as a s... Bright purple. Livelier and more red-fruity than the Napa Valley bottling, displaying redcurrant, cherry and floral scents along with notes of pipe tobacco and dried rose. Juicy, penetrating red and dark berry flavors show impressive purity and vivacity and pick up a spicy quality with air. Taut and linear on the fat-free finish, which lingers with excellent tenacity. This has picked up a lot of energy and high notes since I saw it last year, when it seemed much darker in character.

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum (96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% mixed Bordeaux varietals) exhibits aromas of chocolate, cassis, incense, and flowers as well as a distinctive minerality earthiness, full-bodied power, and a dense, layered mouthfeel. It should easily keep for 25+ years.
