Santi Proemio Amarone Della Valpolicella 2011

Member Review by Kyle Graynor:

Beautiful bouquet of cherries and dark fruit. Well balanced and a little spicy, the tannins are very appreciated. It's a bit too hot (alcoholic) for my taste.

The philosophy of Proemio is to produce high quality, great structured, modern wines with well defined characteristics for each grape variety. The elaboration is made in small 5.000 liters vats, using state of the art equipment and VICARD French oak barrels. The enological team experience compound is almost 120 years, with 5 senior enologists sharing their skills to improve quality. The wines are created starting with fine and selected grapes from Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato and Tunuyán valleys; ideal places for their growing due to its favorable climatic conditions and rocky soils.   The altitude, the excellent temperature amplitude, and the abundant exposure to the Andes sun, all leaves their notable signature on the grapes. Both the meticulous nurturing by our winemakers, as well as prolonged time in bottles and oak barrels, guarantees the excellence in our wines. Read less

Made from 50% corvina, 30% corvinone, 20% rondinella grapes. Exceptional intensity, complexity and concentration. A dark ruby colour with a very slight garnet edge; an intense and very complex perfume with dominant notes of raisins, cherries and prunes with hints of vanilla, violets and cinnamon; and a full, generous and firm flavour with an elegant and very persistent aftertaste of jam and spices. This is a very refined Amarone with great balance and infinite elegance and, thanks to its structure and extracts it will be able to improve with the passage of the years.

Garnet color. Aromas of intense dry grapes and plums with hints of cloves, cinnamon, cherry and iris. Toasted almonds complete the long, silky finish.

Amarone Proemio shows mature fruit aromas of black cherry and blackberry jam backed by elegant tones of clove, pepper, cola and cedar wood. The wine represents a smooth, clean and traditional style that would pair with grilled steak or roast pork. - Wine Enthusiast Magazine 91 PointsThe style of the Valpolicella reds highlights generous aromas and taut palates rather than power, often with excellent results. The 06 Amarone Proemio is penalized by a too-early release but shows considerable potential and simply requires further time in bottle. - Gambero Rosso 2 Glasses

Wine Spectator ReviewDried cherry and earth, with a hint of vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied and tasty. This has a very good density and lots of vanilla oak character. Needs time to come together. Best after 2009.Wine Tasting NotesThe wine has a purple color with garnet rim; intense, very complex bouquet with strong notes of raisins and prunes and hints of vanilla, cinnamon and cherry brandy; full, generous and very firm flavor with an elegant, lingering finish of fruit and spices. It is already well developed, but can keep more than ten years. This is a modern version of Amarone; richer in fruit, it takes less time to reach optimum balance for drinking enjoyment.
