With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. Winemaker’s Notes: Our 2012 Sonoma County Chardonnay is a rich gold color with beautiful aromas of lemon curd, modest yellow apple, and caramelized vanilla. It’s a medium bodied wine that rests nicely on the palate, exuding flavors of bright apple and butterscotch, and finishes with round notes of toasted oak from the barrel fermentation. This is a nice wine that is perfectly balanced between bright citrus fruits and oak flavors. - Mark R. Lyon, Winemaker Vineyards: For more than four decades, Sonoma County has been one of the premier regions in California for Chardonnay. Our multiplicity of climates and soils provide a broad range of sites perfectly suited for this noble grape. Taking full advantage of this diversity, our 2012 Sonoma County Chardonnay features fruit from the Russian River, Carneros, Sonoma Valley, Chalk Hill, and Alexander Valley. Vintage: From start to finish, 2012 was finally our most normal, seasonal vintage since 2007 in Sonoma County and a great year for Chardonnay! The first grapes were picked on September 26th, with harvest lasting all the way through October 22nd. The fruit from this vintage reached full maturity, developing into a medium, juicy berry size. We harvested all of the grapes under clear, night skies. Winemaking: We hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed the grapes, and then racked roughly half of the juice into barrels for primary and malolactic fermentations. The remainder of the fruit was tank fermented at cooler temperatures to preserve the bright fruit and firm structure. After fermentations, 66% of the wine was aged in new and used French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels for 10 months. The rest was kept in stainless steel tanks to help balance out the wine. Composition: 98.8% Chardonnay 0.2% Rousanne 0.2% Viognier 0.8% Mixed Whites Cooperage: Aged 10 months in new and used French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels Alcohol: 13.9% TA: 0.5 g/100ml pH: 3.54

This wine has nice minerality and citrus fruit in the nose, as well as golden apple and pink grapefruit nuances, due to the cool vintage and the extended hang time. We used a lighter oak regime than in the past in order to showcase its beautiful elegance and silkiness. The bright acidity keeps the fruit and texture nicely in balance, and the finish is laced with vanilla and praline flavors. For those who have grown tired of fat, oaky California Chardonnays, here is a refreshing departure from that style.
