[$18] Red and black fruit; cherry and chocolate. First offering of this wine. Incidentally, though called Shiraz was grown in Cali. RMP hated it at $40; I liked it at $18, and purchased a bottle.(This was one of the better offerings of Syrah that I tasted. It seemed on this trip that every winery was pushing Syrah. And though in the past I enjoyed this grape, I have become less interested. Most are flabby, fruity wines with no structure. In fact I only purchased a total of 3 bottles out of 4 cases of wine. When discussing the low quality of many recent vintage Northern California Syrahs, another winery predicted that Syrah will becoming the Merlot of this decade.)

[Pesto, Tomato, Portabella Pizza] Not decanted, drank over 2 hours. Great nose of cassis, ceder, mint, and dark cherry. Well-integrated, but tannins still on the big side. Would not classify this as a fruitbomb; though it has pronouned fruit, it has some nice structure. The only negative was that the wine was still improving with the last sips. Drinking now though will last for at least a few more years. Will decant the next one. Anxiously awaiting the '02; allegedly its even better.

This is only the second release of this vineyard-designated Cabernet from Simirsquo;s 170-acre vineyard in Alexander Valley. The site comprises numerous soil types and microclimates created by an ancient volcanic landslide from nearby Mount St. Helena. Winemaker Steve Reeder blended Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec for the cuveacute;e.

A delicious Cabernet at a terrific price. Smooth, rich and juicy, with tiers of lively black cherry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that are deeply concentrated with a supple, elegant mouthfeel. On the finish the tannins show some grip and a nice dusty, cedary oak quality adds a note of complexity. Best from 2005 through 2011.

This fabulously complex wine shows how you can merge power and nuance with the most complex and satisfying results. Cherries, dried herbs, vanilla and toasty oak, with ripe, lush tannins and great balance. Shows an exciting finesse throughout. Hard to exaggerate the quality. A perfect companion at the table.
