Smoking Loon Merlot 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweet cherry fruit marries with charry oak notes, some dried tomato and attractive dried herb aromas on the nose. Soft and low on entry, this shows a bit of sweetness along with the red berry fruit while maintaining a bit of herbaceousness in the mouth. The fruit on the palate shows that same tomato like fruitiness that one gets on the nose, and it leads to a modest little finish which again shows a touch of sweetness but buffered by some dry tannins. rather simple but well balanced and fresh enough to warrant another sip. 84pts

This wine did not taste like a merlot at all. More like a cab sav. Dry, earthy, but with none of the spice or leather I like in a cab. Oddly, I detected no fruit. :(

The nose is somewhat intense. It is medium body, smooth and well balanced. The finish is kind of short but not abrupt. It is a good chill wine. I enjoyed it.

I recognized the name Smoking Loon, but never had the pleasure. The price was right, so I gave the Merlot a whirl. Has a rich inviting color and a berry aroma. Medium body, velvety and mouth-watering, with a lingering hot aftertaste. Gave me a bit of warmth on this cool summer night. Definitely would do it again!

WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2015 Smoking Loon Merlot opens with aromas of cassis, toasted brioche, toasted graham cracker and a hint of mint. On the palate, blackberry, dried cherry avors lead to notes of Italian roast coee followed by toasted coconut on the extended nish. This versatile and lively wine pairs well with grilled beef in sesame dressing, grilled pork chops with sage-orange rub or roasted beets and rainbow carrots with a light sprinkle of nutmeg. VINTAGE: The 2015 growing season was hotter than the previous, leading to a very early harvest. Chile’s warmer than usual spring was followed by heavy rainfall mid-harvest in March that proved a relief for some producers. The higher-than-average temperatures throughout the season resulted in lower acidity levels. Careful harvesting of the grapes and meticulous blending allowed winemakers to achieve a good balance with each varietal, with Cabernet Sauvignon exhibiting deep red fruit characteristics with a hint of toasted herbs.were marked with balance, intense color and expressive fruit characteristics. OAK SOURCING: 35% American, 65% French Oak ALCOHOL: 13.5% PH: 3.62

TASTING NOTES: Our 2014 Merlot displays a beautiful combination of fruity and savory aromas—dark plum, violet, fresh mushroom and a hint of sage and thyme. Flavors of black currant, pomegranate and espresso are met with well-integrated oak inuence. This rich, medium-bodied Merlot has just the right acidity to make it versatile when pairing with food. Pair with shepherd’s pie, spaghetti or a chocolate dessert dish. VINTAGE: Chile’s growing season started with widespread frosts in mid-September, dropping the countries annual production between 25 and 50 percent. Due to a smaller harvest and barely any rain during bud break, owering and ripening, harvest came earlier than in previous vintages. In addition, warmer than usual temperatures and an ongoing water shortage added stress to the grapes and produced some excellent quality wines. They were marked with balance, intense color and expressive fruit characteristics. ALCOHOL: 13.5% pH: 3.50 TA: 5.8 g/L

Our California Merlot has aromas of concentrated wild strawberries and tea leaf, with a touch of herbaceous sage for extra complexity. On the palate, this wine has classic Merlot character, with bright cranberry and cherry flavors and a light herbal note, expertly balanced with integrated oak and hints of milk chocolate. Medium-bodied with moderate tannins, the zesty acidity makes this an excellent wine for food-pairing. - Winery
