Suduiraut Sauternes 1989

Winemaker's Notes:

The wines of Chateau Suduiraut are elegant, sweet and full-bodied with a remarkable life-expectancy. They are a beautiful gold colour with amber tints when aged. They have harmony, power, complexity, and finesse: it is often said that a great Suduiraut is the essence of Sauternes.

Château Suduiraut:
The terroir of Sauternes covering 2,200 hectares, lies forty kilometres from Bordeaux between the left bank of the Garonne and the forests of the Landes. The appellation Sauternes covers the communes of Sauternes, Bommes, Fargues, Preignac and Barsac.

Sauternes, overtly sweetly seductive. Gracefully matured Sauternes charms with subtlety. Golden ambrosia that guards a youthful nose with a bouquet of quince, honeycomb and light vanilla caramel, deftly combines sweetness with acidity. Ch. Suduiraut is premier Cru classed in Sauternes. Their procedure is classic, only creating their tête de cuvee when the mist combine with sunshine allowing for elusive noble rot. This is 90% Semillon, 10% sauvignon grown on sandy clay soils near the Ciron and Garonne rivers. Pair, of course with Roquefort and other strong blue cheeses or foie gras, and as well sauté of chicken with apricots.

Vibrant aromas of fruit salad and honey. Moderately viscous and bright in the mouth; not nearly as powerful as the 90. Nicely balanced even if there still a bit of acidity to be absorbed. Intensely flavored and youthful. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Tasted from the Chateau reserves at the estate. The 89 is a little lighter in hue compared to the Suduiraut 90. The nose offers caramelized pear frangipane yellow flowers and a touch of quince moderate vigour at first but opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of bitter orange rind on the entry marmalade quince and a mandarin and dried apricot on the finish. There is good length to this Suduiraut although it misses a little breeding perhaps due to the denuding by the Creme de Tete. Tasted February 2011. Neal Martins Wine Journal.

Exotically perfumed violet and rose petals burst on your palate accompanied by dried apricot lemon and honey flavors. Gorgeous and subtle glowing on the finish. Wine Spectator.
