Tantalus Riesling 2018

Member Review by zufrieden:

Everything is a matter of taste, right? Well, it is the same with Tantalus: the 2018 Riesling is the same clean, electric, mouth reveille of Granny Smith and citrus acidity on the palate. Perhaps slightly tamed. But still not exactly for the faint of heart, yet quite for the connoisseur. Will age nicely for at least 5-7 years, but perfect now with Chinese or assorted seafood. Great stuff. 90.

Tantalus' wine making team consists of two dedicated and talented people. Senior winemaking consultant Jacqueline Kemp comes to us via New Zealand's Central Otago region. She brings with her a passion for making Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Jacqueline received her winemaking degree from Lincoln University NZ and she has since gone on to work multiple vintages in Burgundy, Western Australia and New Zealand. She is the former winemaker for Akarua Winery in Central Otago. David Paterson fills the shoes of Tantalus' production winemaker. He's a Kiwi with a Canadian connection, having been born in Vancouver. David also received his winemaking degree from Lincoln University and he's spent the last several years working vintages at premium wineries in Oregon, New Zealand and Australia. David's former position was production winemaker with Henschke Cellars in South Australia. Our vineyard is managed by Warwick Shaw who holds a viticulture diploma from Okanagan University College. Before joining the wine side of things, Warwick understood the relationship between land and climate, having previously been employed as a field technician in the forestry sector. Warwick is passionate about growing premium quality grapes knowing that the potential for great wine is determined in the vineyard. Jane Hatch is the link between great wine and yourself, overseeing general operations, marketing and sales. An ecologist with a love for wine, she introduces our product to restaurants and wine stores near and far, as well as bringing Tantalus to life for those who drop by our Cellar Door. Read less

Aerated at Marquis Wines using the usual skullduggery, this wine was a wonderful Granny Smith Apple on the nose and palate - as expected - with the normal tartness. At home, the wine is muted, but savory - with less forward notes as just described. Very Tantalus with bracing acidity and cleansing Malus Domesticus (apple) flavour. 89 points.

This latest edition of the reputed Tantalus Riesling has a slightly more dense nose of icing sugar sprinkled over pear, apricot and green apple; the mouth-feel is viscous, Mosel-like with citrus (noted with this producer), honey, peach and apricot mid-palate with more sweetness than in past vintages. Finish is fresh, acidic and lingering. Better balanced - like the 2012. 90 points.

Finally, a truly balanced Tantalus Riesling. The gentle pear and MacIntosh Apple nose is followed - on entry - by a (still) bracing grapefruit-like acidity - which is a good thing - but this factor is balanced by much heavier fruit and viscosity. The wine is British Columbia for sure but has cross elements of Rheingau and Alsace on the finish. The best Tantalus yet. 90 points.
