Tresso Cellars Shiraz Blend Stellenbosch Ancient Fynbos 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

South African Shiraz blends have been one of the most exciting developments from this wine region in the last decade. Shiraz quality from South Africa has quickly become synonymous with South Africa and in this wine, blended with the noble Bordeaux varieties, it highlights an exciting juxtaposition between the verve and energy of the new world and the culture, classicism and tradition of the old world. This wine is delicious approachable and balance youthful fruit character with the benefit of ageabilty. A combination of high quality vineyards from the two most exciting and prestigious South African wine regions the Stellenbosch and paarl regions which together account for more than 85% of all medals awarded to South African wines in 2006. South Africa is known as the ‘cradle of humankind’ and these are some of the oldest soils in the world. A combination of alluvial silt and decomposed igneous granite, the depth and complexity of the soils is only exceeded by the quality of the wines that they yield. The wine is merely a conduit for expressing this remarkable terroir. The Bordeaux varietal s are grown on soils carbon dated at more than one million years. The winery is based in the picturesque and well know region of Stellenbosch. The grapes are fermented separately and the varieties individually nurtured and made as individual varietal expressions. Only once the quality has been ascertained and locked in, are small parcels hand-selected and then meticulously blended to form the finished product. Wine has been made in the Stellenbosach region since the late 1650’s when Dutch Governor Simon van Der Stel (after whom Stellenbosch is named) imported French rootstocks and planted them in this fertile valley. Wine had been contiguously produced in Stellenbosch since then and this region can either referred to as a ‘New Old world’ or Old new world’ region.

Found this in a bargain bin, and thought the label was quite lovely. We purchased it and were pleasantly surprised. We continued to buy bottles for our gallery openings, and social events and always got compliments. Many people said that they were not fans of red wine, but that this was delicious! [It is.] It has a fruity taste, with a lingering smoky aftertaste. It is quite smooth, and a bottle could vanish in one sitting.

Possibly a bad bottle, but there was high amount of bottle stink (smelled skunky). In the mouth, yes, I tasted it, there was definitely still the skunk plus a bit a fruit, but not a lot. Mostly earth, some herbs, and yet more skunk.
