Trimbach Riesling 2017

Member Review by puhnner:

Great little number of a drier style Riesling. Wine Maker's notes are quite accurate: 'On the nose, fine mineral fragrance with ginger, caraway seed, underripe pineapple, and flowers. There are flavors of white peach, quince and lemon on the palate with a lingering, clean and dry finish.' I liked its dry rather than sweet profile.

Established in 1626, the Trimbach family has a wine-making history stretching back almost 400 years. It was not until the late 19th century, however, under the leadership of Frédéric-Emile Trimbach, that the business began to expand. Success came when he exhibited the wines at an international fair in Brussels in 1898, to much acclaim. Since the days of Frédéric-Emile the house of Trimbach has remained a family run business, based in Ribeauvillé. Today, Jean and Pierre Trimbach are in charge of the winery. The Trimbach family currently own vineyards scattered across three villages, with an emphasis on planting Riesling and Gewurztraminer, and the style associated with the house is one of dry structure and flavorsome with firm acidity where appropriate. Trimbach are not particularly known for their red wines, but they do produce a basic Pinot Noir as well as a Reserve Personelle, as well as basic cuvées of many of the typical Alsatian varieties, including Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. Trimbach produce both late harvest wines of Alsace, the Selection de Grains Nobles and Vendanges Tardives wines, made from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris or Muscat. These make a departure from the classic Trimbach style as they naturally exhibit residual sugar and possibly also characteristics of noble rot, but they still have the necessary acidity to maintain balance and freshness. Binny's 4/2015. My new "go to" white wine for the summer of 2015. Sometimes you need to ask the wine guy at the store for some help. He led me to this superb dry Riesling. Loads of fruity taste treats in this bottle. Got to have more of this as hotter weather approaches my deck. 2 more from Binny's on an 8/2015 trip. Still love it, helped me celebrate an extended 2015 Indian Summer. Why do I always seem to talk about weather when the subject is wine? Binny's 3/2016. July 4th, I had to have a bottle to celebrate Germany's narrow victory over Italy on 7/2 at the Euro 2016 tourney. However, I still love Italy over Germany for wines.

I bought this bottle of wine for £6 frpm the website www.cellartrade.co.uk Alsace is an appellation created in 1962,although there has been viticulture here since at least the medieval period, producing mainly white wines [although a few are red ] in the east of France by the German border. Indeed at some periods of history it was a part of Germany and therefore the wines are not dissimilar to those on the other side of the Rhine.Appellation rules dictate a tall thin bottle called a 'flute d'Alsace' This is the only French appellation where the grape variety has to appear on the label. My bottle comes from a well known and ancient family concern. I started it last night with my supper of fish cakes. It is a dry wine but one that is refreshing with plenty of fruit [think citrus and sour apples] I thought it beautifully put together and that it went well with the fish

A clean, minerally, light bodied Riesling with racy acidity and subtle flavors of yellow apple, apple blossom, almond and smoke. Hints of fleur de sel and lemon zest linger on the moderate finish.

The white wines of Alsace, named after their grape varietal-and not their place of origin-are another world altogether: mostly light to medium-bodied, mouthwatering and will accompany fish, simple roasted chicken and vegetable dishes wonderfully.'Light-bodied and fresh, with racy acidity enlivening flavors of anise, fresh quince, blanched almond and grapefruit zest. Lacy, with a delicate finish.' - Wine Spectator
