Since 1626, Maison Trimbach has been producing traditional Alsace wines recognised all over the world. The Trimbachs have always had a purist vision. For 12 generations, the Family has been producing dry wines, very strictly structured, long-living and fruity, elegant and balanced: it's the Trimbach Style! The Trimbachs let their wines age in the bottles in the cellar for a few, or sometimes several years before they release them on the market, especially for the Great Wines, such as Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile. Maison Trimbach's vineyards are all situated around Ribeauvillé, where the soils are dominant in limestone. They benefit from the alsatian microclimate, thanks to the Vosges Mountains protection, which preserves the plain from the rain. Elegant and classic with grapefruit and white peach on the nose fully integrated into a food-friendly structure. The drivers are minerality and a crisp lemony acid backbone leading in to a long finish. This Riesling is dry, elegant and restrained, with a deliciously food-friendly bite. In Alsace this edge is what goes so well with, and cuts straight through, the local cuisine. Goose, sauerkraut and onion quiche are the watchwords here. Moving out of Alsace, it would be ideal with rich fish dishes, rice (legendary with kedgeree), pork and modern oriental food from sushi to light curries.

Trimbach:

Established in 1626, the Trimbach family has a wine-making history stretching back almost 400 years. It was not until the late 19th century, however, under the leadership of Frédéric-Emile Trimbach, that the business began to expand. Success came when he exhibited the wines at an international fair in Brussels in 1898, to much acclaim. Since the days of Frédéric-Emile the house of Trimbach has remained a family run business, based in Ribeauvillé. Today, Jean and Pierre Trimbach are in charge of the winery. The Trimbach family currently own vineyards scattered across three villages, with an emphasis on planting Riesling and Gewurztraminer, and the style associated with the house is one of dry structure and flavorsome with firm acidity where appropriate. Trimbach are not particularly known for their red wines, but they do produce a basic Pinot Noir as well as a Reserve Personelle, as well as basic cuvées of many of the typical Alsatian varieties, including Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. Trimbach produce both late harvest wines of Alsace, the Selection de Grains Nobles and Vendanges Tardives wines, made from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris or Muscat. These make a departure from the classic Trimbach style as they naturally exhibit residual sugar and possibly also characteristics of noble rot, but they still have the necessary acidity to maintain balance and freshness. As a big fan of German Riesling, the drier, crisper style of an Alsace Riesling always comes as a shock to the palate and this one was no exception. I bought the bottle so my husband could try a different style, and while it was ok, I prefer Sauv Blanc or Chardonnay when I want a drier white wine. This one had lots of lively acidity and citrus flavors - would have been nice with a rich chicken dish.

White flowers, lemon notes and minerality touch on the nose. Fresh and vibrant, grapefruit and citrus, white peach, this wine has a long finish which is a sign of a beautiful future for the wine.

Trimbach wines are the only wines that appear on the winelists of every Michelin three star Restaurant in France. The hallmark of good Alsace Riesling is a clean, dry finish with beautifully balanced acidity and that's exactly what this 2008 from Trimbach delivers...and more. The Wine Spectator just scored it 90 points saying "There's a pleasant salty tanginess to this wine, underscoring flavors of Gala apple, grapefruit and stone, with a hint of petrol. Clean and well-defined by the firm acidity, yet well-meshed and elegant overall, with a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2020."

WS 90 Pts - Winemaker Notes - This Riesling is a great classic of Alsace. At once delicate and vital, its intense fruit is given great length by a backbone of crisp acidity producing some of the world's greatest and longest tasting wines.

A family-run winery since 1626 with some of the best Grand Cru vineyards in Alsace. This, the basic Riesling, is delicate yet firm, fresh, dry and finely mineral.
