Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2001 Brut Premier Cru Coeur de Cuvee is another pristine, brilliant wine, here made all the more remarkable by the challenging vintage. This is a decidedly rich, structured style for Vilmart, with tons of fruit, phenomenal length and an exceptional, textured finish. Today, the 2001 Coeur de Cuvee is a touch inward, but another year or two in bottle should help the wine come to together. It is yet another superb Champagne from Vilmart and proprietor Laurent Champs. The Coeur de Cuvee is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir from Les Blanches Voies fermented in small neutral French oak and bottled with 8 grams of dosage. Only the ‘heart’ of the pressing, the middle 800 liters, is used for the Coeur de Cuvee, hence the wine’s name. This is Lot L0109, disgorged January, 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021...95" WA 12/10

this is not a quaffing wine. it needs an hour of decanting and MUST be paired with food...we paired it with burritos and it was terrific. I had a chorizo buritto and my wife had a veggie one. Not as full bodied as i had expected but that didn't matter. Lots of oak, but not in a bad way.

Half an hour after opening, the color was translucent, like an Oregon pinot, but brick red, trending strongly to orange near the rim. The nose was lovely, starting wtih coffee, then hazelnut liquor, buttered toast, and blackberries. Blackberries were clear on the palate as well, along with cassis, followed by sage and licorice, all over an underlying mushroom earthiness. Tannins did not show up until the finish, which was long, smooth and had a creamy softness.Three hours after the bottle was opened the nose had changed. It was more obviously earthy with boatloads of chocolate. Blackberries and vanilla cream rounded it out. The three hours made a big difference on the palate, which is now far fruitier, with cherries and blackberries dominating, the mushrooms and sage now in the background. Add strawberry and caramel in the midpalate. This is a very nice wine, even lovely for the price. The finish is still soft, creamy, and long.More tomorrow.Second night now. The wine was open last night for about 5 hours, then closed with a Vacuu-Vin stopper. It is still tremendously aromatic, even more floral than last night. Lavender is coming through along with black currant, blackberries and pepper. Plenty of black fruit and plums on the palate, perhaps even a tiny touch of cranberry, along with a pinch of pepper. That said, it is far more one-dimensional than last night, giving its initial fruit and not much to follow. There is also that slighly oxidized bruised plum taste you get in a wine that is over the hill. Not, mind you, blatant port-like oxidation, merely a sense of flatness and age.Conclusion? This was a good wine, even a great wine with the QPR, on the first night. The second night is was on its way down hill. That probably means it is ready to drink now but right now. Don't leave this in

Rubinrot mit auberginefarbenen Nuancen und violetten Reflexen. An der Nase bestechen die Aromen von Toast, Pfeffer, Kirsche, Cassis, Kaffee und Vanille. Am Gaumen dominiert die Kirsche mit Süssholz und pfeffrigen Tanninen. Schöner Abgang.

Bright medium red. Expansive bouquet of musky red and dark berries, medicinal cherry, rose oil and Asian spices. Juicy raspberry and rose pastille flavors are framed by silky tannins and given a boost by zesty minerality. Packs a solid punch but comes off almost weightless. The tannins fade into the sweet fruit on the finish, which is strikingly pure and very persistent. Lovely right now.

Leuchtendes Granat mit rubinem Schimmer. Verführerisches Fruchtbouquet an feinste Pot-Purri erinnernd, dunkle Rosen, kandierte Kirschen, Dörrfrüchte in allen Variationen und zarte Pralinennote. Veloursartige Tanninstruktur im weichen Gaumen, wieder vollreife Fruchtkomplexe und desserthafte Schokosüsse, grossartige Balance zwischen Reife und Reserven, lakritzeartiges Extrakt in der Mitte, kontinuierliche Dörrfruchtaromen und noble Lebkuchenwürze, zunehmende Intensität bis ins samtig ausklingende Finale.

The 2001 Vina Tondonia Reserva is bridled with a lovely nose of decayed red fruit, fireside hearth, a touch of mulberry and small red cherry. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp red fruits (wild strawberry and cranberry) with a sharp, vibrant, tense, tannic finish that has immense precision. There is a slight saline note lingering in the mouth after the wine has (regretfully) departed. Drink now-2030+.
