Vietti Barbera d'Asti la Crena 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lots of red fruit shows up on this sweet nose which picks up a little forest floor and clay soil notes with air. A Touch soft for Barbera, with soft tannins lending this a velvety, easy to drink texture. Lots of plummy, red fruit is large scaled and fresh in the mouth with those tiny tannins making this fun to drink but the finish, slightly jammy but still with plummy red fruit flavors, is a bit on the short side. 88pts

Deeper and darker than I expected compared to other B d'Astis but enjoyable at the price. Better the 2nd night.

Excellent value, terrific food wine with just the right amount of acidity.

This young wine shows a beautiful purple, ruby color in the glass and offers a nice mouthful of ripe cherry and fresh berries. The tannins are soft on this medium-bodied wine, and there's a nice level of acidity making the Vietti Barbera D'Asti perfect for pairing with food. Could benefit from a few years in the bottle, but can be enjoyed right away.

Displays very ripe aromas of crushed blackberry and dark chocolate, with notes of cream. Full-bodied, with mineral, blueberry and lemon peel flavors and firm acidity. A racy wine. Drink now. 900 cases made. -JS Wine Spectator. A Barbera wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2006 Vietti Barbera dAsti Crena 750ml

Vietti's Barbera d'Asti La Crena is one of my favorite wines in the lineup and it is once again superb in 2005. The clarity, precision and vibrancy of this wine are all remarkable, as layers of mineral-infused dark fruit flow onto the palate effortlessly. The wine offers awesome persistence and a polished finish that lasts forever. This isn't the biggest or most obvious vintage of La Crena, but it is surely among the most elegant. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

The 2006 Barbera d’Asti La Crena is a dense, brooding effort loaded with mineral-infused dark fruit, violets, graphite, flowers and French oak. This is an especially seamless yet mid-weight La Crena built on elegance rather than power, with an impeccably clean, polished finish that rounds things out. Usually I prefer Barbera on the young side, but La Crena truly sings around age ten or so. It remains one of the most under-the-radar wines in Piedmont. La Crena is made from vines that are over 70 years old in Agliano, one of the most privileged sites for Barbera in Piedmont. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2021.

Serious and multifaceted, with peppery black fruit aromas wrapped up in a frame of toasty new oak. Abundant but plush tannins support intense blackberry and roasted nut flavors in the mouth, winding up with a hit of mocha on the long, highly nuanced finish. Not your grandmother's Barbera.
