Votre Sante Chardonnay California Francis Ford Coppola 2014

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Chardonnay thrives in cool climates like those found in its native Burgundy. For Votre Santé, Francis Coppola's winemakers look to vineyards tucked away in the foothills of California’s dramatic mountains and intimate river valleys, in close proximity to the chilly Pacific waters. This is “the other California,” where fog creeps in and tempers the region’s famous sunny weather. Cool conditions throughout the North Coast, Mendocino, Monterey and Sierra Foothills appellations give Chardonnay wines of aromatic fruit character, balanced acidity and distinctive minerality. Votre Sante is California Chard with the balance and style of a wine from France. Partially barrel fermented and partially stainless steel fermented it's aged 6 months if French oak barrels. The alcohol is a tame 13.5% and it undergoes only a partial malolactic fermentation. With the elegant touch of an intricate die cut label, Votre Sante is a pretty wine in all respects and a super value.

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less
