Tasting Notes:

Wente Vineyards Riva Ranch Reserve Chardonnay is a classic example of why Arroyo Seco is justifiably famous as a premier location for richly flavored Chardonnay. Located at the mouth of the Arroyo Seco River, the Wente vineyard sits on well drained, deep sandy soil studded with smooth river rocks, referred to as “Greenfield potatoes ” by the local inhabitants. The cool climate and extended growing season of the Arroyo Seco give the Riva Ranch Reserve Chardonnay a rich fruity quality that creates a beautiful wine when combined with restrained vinification enhancements. The chardonnay was entirely barrel fermented adding complexity and depth without an excessively leesy character. The pinot blanc and gewürztraminer lots were individually cold fermented in stainless steel to extract their maximum fruitiness. The entire lot was then assembled and barrel aged before bottling, adding a roundness to the wine, but without bitter oak flavors. The partial suppression (75%) of malolactic fermentation creates a lively tension between the exotic tropical fruit flavors, richness and acidity. These sophisticated, delicate touches by the winemaker result in a beautifully balanced wine with a long, lingering finish.
