Wynn's Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Shihraz Merlot 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

Vintage Conditions There was an ideal growing season leading up to the 2002 vintage, with average temperatures and rainfall in the winter and spring. Cool and dry conditions in January promoted slow ripening conditions which continued despite warmer weather in February and March. Despite being a late vintage, the fruit produced was of very high quality. Grape Variety Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz (Syrah), Merlot Maturation This wine was matured for ten months in a combination of new, one and two year old French and American oak. Colour Deep red. Nose An attractive dark fruit nose with lifted notes of mint, florals and spice. The mintiness of Cabernet combines well with peppery shiraz and the underlying cherry notes from the merlot. Palate The palate is intense yet soft with notes of dark cherry combined with soft oak flavours. The finish is long and flavoursome with soft tannins and integrated oak. Whilst drinking superbly now, this wine will age in the classic Wynns style.

In 1951 Melbourne wine merchants Samuel and David Wynn purchased Riddoch's original vineyards and winery and renamed the property Wynns Coonawarra Estate. The Wynns family recognised the intrinsic qualities of Coonawarra wines - their richness and intensity of fruit character - and set out to build an independent identity in the region. They created the famous label that has made John Riddoch's winery one of Australia's best known buildings. Read less

90/100 - Dark dark maroon color. Very beautiful. Earthy, smoky nose with a little fruit. First taste: Fruity sweetness which transitions to a smoky and dark, maybe even some chocolate/cocoa as well. Medium tannins, mild to moderate 'bite' on the sides of your tongue. Not too dry either. Pleasant long finish, nearly 20-30 seconds. Very well structured and a pleasant surprise.
